    Torchmark Corporation Announces Chief Executive Officer at Subsidiary American 
                                    Income 
 
    BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Dec. 19 -- Torchmark Corporation 
(NYSE: TMK) announced today the election of Roger Smith, 51, to Chief 
Executive Officer and President of American Income Life Insurance Company of 
Waco, Texas, a Torchmark subsidiary.  Mr. Smith began his career with American 
Income in 1975 as a field sales agent.  In 1999 he was named Executive Vice 
President and Sales Director.  Since that time American Income's number of 
agents and new sales volume has doubled, and the Company has become 
Torchmark's fastest growing distribution system. 
    Torchmark Corporation is a financial services holding company specializing 
in life and supplemental health insurance for "middle income" Americans 
marketed through multiple distribution channels including direct response, and
