GMA has just been re elected and is PRO mining.
The economy in R.P is very sick and this kind of foriegn investment will be encouraged at every stage and not hindered by GMA or her government..

They seem (for my money anyways) to have got the timing right and the product right. The numbers we can only guess at on the report but they are gonna be big. It depends as many people have pointed out on how they raise the funds for the reopening. If the tipsters are to be believed then people are queueing up to fund this so there 'shouldnt' be too much equity dillution, if this is the case then this is gonna be BIG. Especially with demand for copper at an all time high.

From what i have read it will be around the end of the month at the earliest, would expect activity to start picking up before then as word starts to spread. The numbers involved are going to be huge. Hopefully they will announcve a tie up with one of the major players that are looking to take all the output they can get there hands on due to the high price/demand for copper.

Yes suntan, about now would be very timely indeed...

July 2 (Bloomberg) -- Cia. Vale do Rio Doce, the largest iron-ore producer, opened the $413 million Sossego copper mine in Brazil's Amazon rain forest, the largest new copper mine on the globe since 2001, as a shortage of the metal presses companies to search for deposits.

The Rio de Janeiro-based company is expanding as the U.S. and China consume more copper for cars, appliances and homes, fueling a 63 percent rise in copper prices in the last year. The world may consume 511,000 tons more copper than is produced this year, almost four times Sossego's expected annual output, according to CRU International, a London-based metals research company.

``There couldn't have been a better moment to start up this mine,'' Fernando Carneiro, Vale's planning manager for the new mine, told reporters at the mine, 2000 kilometers north of Rio in northeastern Brazil, near the city of Carajas. ``Prices are high and no one else is starting up a project of this scale....

..Sossego is designed to produce 140,000 tons of copper per year.

``Demand is very hot now for copper and most producers expect a deficit so it's a very good time for Vale to enter the business,'' said Fabio Zagatti, an analyst at HSBC Investment Bank in Sao Paulo. ...

Lula is trying to boost exports of commodities such as copper to help pull Brazil out last year's recession, the first since 1992. On the other hand, Vale has intentions to bid for copper a mine in Peru this month, and has geologists searching for the metal in Mongolia.

Controlling Stake

Vale also is interested in buying Noranda Inc., Canada's biggest mining company, people familiar with the situation said....

..Among Noranda's copper operations are the Altonorte smelter in Chile, Kidd Creek in Timmins, Ontario, Falconbridge Ltd.'s 44 percent stake in the Collahuasi mine in Chile and a 34 percent stake in the Antamina mine in Peru.

Denis Couture, a spokesman for Noranda, didn't return a telephone message seeking comment. Fernando Thompson, media relations manager for Vale, declined to comment.

Global Exploration

Sossego is the first of 56 new copper mines set to open this decade, adding about 3.4 million tons of production, or a quarter of global output last year, according to a report by CRU.

The shortage of copper is taking mining companies to parts of the world that haven't had mines operating in decades. Zambia will have its first copper venture in 30 years when Vancouver- based First Quantum Minerals Ltd. expects to begin production at the Kansanshi mine.

Chilean state-run producer Codelco plans to increase output by 14 percent this year, about 1.8 million tons and by 47 percent in 2009.

Global copper inventories monitored by the London Metal Exchange are the lowest since December 1996, and warehouse supplies may run out by the end of the U.S. summer, said Charles Hatton, an analyst in New York at Man Financial Inc., the largest clearing company on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

``Any supply disruption due to strike or engineering problem, in fact any delay whatsoever'' can push prices higher, Hatton said.

Copper for September delivery fell 1 cent, or 0.8 percent, to $1.212 a pound at 8:17 a.m. on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.

There have been one or two large sells but the buys easily outweigh those - at least that's how it looks so far.

Whilst the bid eased back the ask remained positively firm which is not a particularly bad sign.

Biggest Philippine copper mine might back in business

www.chinaview.cn 2004-06-17 23:56:52

MANILA, June 17 (Xinhuanet) -- The biggest Philippine copper mine might soon be back in business after 10 years' closure and is expected to have potential export earnings of up to 2.2 billion USdollars at an average of 110 million dollars a year over the duration of the mines 20-year lifespan.

Toledo Copper, an international mining development and investment company agreed to invest 28 million dollars in exchangefor a 40 percent interest in Atlas' Toledo Copper Mine in the central Philippine island province of Cebu, an Atlas official saidThursday.

A feasibility study on the rehabilitation and re-opening of theToledo Mine was close to completion and currently being audited byinternational consultant, Atlas said in a statement filed with thePhilippine Stock Exchange.

"The study is based on a mine throughput of 40,000 tons of ore per day which, over an 11 year period, is estimated to produce an average 100 million pounds (45 million kg) of copper and 45,000 ounces (1.27 million g) of gold from underground block-caving operations," the statement said.

Waterlogged and severely damaged in 1992 by a powerful typhoon, the mine was forced to close in January 1994 following problems relating to debt and low output.

Revival of the Toledo Copper Mine would be beneficial not only to the local community in Cebu but also to the national economy, Atlas said, adding that it would prioritize environmental care andland improvement.

Atlas has also entered an agreement with Australian miner Investika to invest 1 million dollars in exchange for a 20-percentinterest in Atlas Palawan Nickel project in the southern Philippines. Enditem
