International stocks trading in New York closed mostly higher on Thursday.

The BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts edged up 0.15% to 133.68. The European index improved 0.27% to 125.04 and the Asian index increased 0.20% to 152.63.

Meanwhile, the Latin American index fell 1.1% to 232.72, and the emerging-markets index eased 0.08% to 272.23.

Shire PLC (SHPG, SHP.LN) was among the companies with ADRs that traded actively.

AstraZeneca PLC (AZN, AZN.LN), BP PLC (BP, BP.LN) and Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSA, RDSA.LN, RDSB, RDSB.LN) were among the companies with ADRs trading in New York that began trading ex-dividend. The ex-dividend date is the usually-day-long period in which investors cannot buy a stock and still receive its dividend, said Accendo Markets analyst Michael van Dulken. ADRs of AstraZeneca fell 0.28% to $28.76, BP's fell 0.36% to $33.68, and Royal Dutch Shell's fell 0.77% to $52.96.

Dublin-based drug maker Shire's fourth-quarter profit surged as its recently acquired Baxalta business added about $1.8 billion in revenue. ADRs rose 2.6% to $178.70.

Turkey's biggest mobile phone operator Turkcell's (TKC, TCELL.IS) revenue and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, or Ebitda--a common measure of cash flow--beat analysts' consensus in the most recent period. ADRs rose 2.3% to $7.72.
