Notes to Editors

Gunter Thielen, Bertelsmann AG, Chairman & CEO

Gunter Thielen has been with Bertelsmann for 22 years, and has spent the past 17
years turning the former "Printing and Industrial Services" division into the
state-of-the-art arvato AG. On 28 July 2002, the Bertelsmann AG executive board
appointed the 60-year-old executive as their Chairman & CEO.

Born on 4 August 1942 in Germany's Saarland region, Thielen studied mechanical
engineering and economics at Aachen Technical University. His doctorate in
engineering was followed by various executive positions in the BASF group before
he became technical director of the Wintershall refinery in Kassel.

Thielen began his career at Bertelsmann in 1980, when he became CEO of the
printing company maul-belser in Nuremberg. In 1985 he took over the
responsibility for the printing and industrial services, at the same time taking
a seat on the Bertelsmann AG executive board. Now known as arvato AG, the
corporate division achieves annual revenues of 2.992 billion euro (2000/01
Annual Report) with its approximately 29,000 employees.
