Shell: 'We'll prove we can make money in renewables'

Finance chief says oil and gas giant will deliver 'competitive and attractive returns' from energy transition

Shell won’t sacrifice “value for volume” while it proves its credentials as a leading player in the global power sector, said the oil and gas giant’s chief financial officer.

Jessica Uhl said Shell “won’t be pursuing scale for scale’s sake” as she responded to questions from financial analysts prompted by the group’s recent declaration that it wants to be “the world’s biggest power company” by the early 2030s.

Its recent determination to be a player in wind and solar is a big shift from a 2016 statement by CEO Ben van Beurden that 'no one makes money from renewables'.

Asked to elaborate on its new ambitions, Uhl said Shell believes it can “lead and thrive” in a global shift to electricity, but added: “We’re going to prove we can make competitive and attractive returns before scaling up”.

The oil group this year has engaged in a spree of activity in the clean energy space.

That has included stakes in two innovative offshore wind technologies – one with Google-owner Alphabet – and the acquisition of battery pioneer Sonnen.

Shell has also indicated it plans to enter the UK offshore wind sector, adding to a range of existing interests in the sector.

It relaunched its UK utility business as a 100%-renewable electricity supplier and rebadged it with its own name.

Shell currently plans to put $1-2bn a year into New Energies up to 2020, but has previously said that could double as the oil and gas group ramps up its power sector presence.
One in 6 homes to get Wind Power.

Which companies will benefit from this new infrastructure?

LONDON (AFX) - The Department of Trade & Industry today gave the go ahead
for the development of more offshore windfarms with the potential to power 1 in
6 UK households.
Trade Secretary Patricia Hewitt released details of proposals for the next
generation of offshore windfarms which will provide up to 6 gigawatts of new
energy generation by 2010, enough to power 15 pct of all households in the UK.
Hewitt said: "The Energy White Paper committed us to providing 10 pct of
energy from renewable sources by the year 2010, and an aspiration to double that
figure by the year 2020.
"This announcement represents a big step towards meeting our goals."
She said the move will help the UK renewables industry to grow creating over
20,000 new jobs in manufacturing, installation and maintenance, as the windfarms
take shape.
Tenders will be invited from windfarm developers for sites in the Thames
Estuary, the Greater Wash and the North West which have been identified as ideal
environments for siting offshore wind turbines.
Site leases will be awarded in the autumn and construction is expected to
begin in the next few years.

Good investment? Found this on a Yahoo Messageboard for Astropower:

my astropower system

my system, on my house's roof, is almost
complete
let me tell you, it is a thing of beauty
40 120 watt astropower modules
through 2 German Sunny Boy no-fan (heat sinks)
inverters (2.4 KW each)
$42,900 system - fully installed
minus 24,000 from LIPA (our electric utility
here on Long Island)
minus $3,750 NY State tax rebate
my cost = $15,150.
I am on the grid - net metering. overall, my electric bill will be ZERO.
this is a win-win situation for everybody: APWR, the earth, my pocketbook, LIPA
APWR is an ass-kicking great investment IMO

What ever happened to the JET project - the Joint European Taurus.
This was supposed to be the next big thing in energy production.
You might say a quantum leap better than nuclear.

Alternative energies still have to compete with "cheap" fossil fuels.
At the end of the day its all about money. When fossil fuels become scarce
the price will ramp up and alternatives will then come more and more into play.
