(Bloomberg) -- Engie SA expects to move forward with three South African solar projects this week as the nation struggles to accelerate a program to add renewable power.

The French developer plans to sign power-purchase agreements for a total of 225 megawatts of solar projects after being selected as a preferred bidder as part of the so-called fifth bid window, according to Mohamed Hoosen, Engie’s managing director for renewables in Africa, Middle East and Asia.

South Africa picked 25 wind- and solar-power projects to be built by private developers last year to reduce the nation’s reliance on coal for electricity and end rolling blackouts that are curbing economic growth. Those plans have faced various delays and challenges to reach financial close.

“It’s always a challenge -- the market has changed fundamentally to how it was 18 months ago,” Hoosen said in an interview, referring to factors including a surge in supply-chain costs.

South Africa revised commercial close timelines for the projects chosen in the fifth bid window. It’s since signed some agreements in a staggered order. Developers also await the selection of preferred bidders for the sixth bid window.

The company remains interested in realizing more projects through the government program, Hoosen said. “To the extent that they bring these programs to market, we will be there to submit our bids.”

As part of South Africa’s energy transition, about 53 gigawatts of wind and solar plants will be required over the next decade as aging coal stations, currently producing over 80% of the nation’s electricity, are retired, according to state-owned utility Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd.

Job Creation

Plans to switch from a dependence on coal mean South Africa, with one of the worst unemployment rates in the world, needs to replace jobs that would be eliminated. A proposed solution is building or assembling some of the equipment in the country.

“There is tremendous value in establishing a local base for manufacturing,”; though there are some preliminary conditions, Hoosen said. “You need the certainty and reliability of the deployment of renewables” and you need to be competitive.

Engie has about 320 megawatts of renewable projects operating in South Africa, including two concentrated solar power stations capable of storing electricity for hours. That’s giving way to the use of photovoltaic panels with batteries “as we look at the evolution of technology and cost,” Hoosen said.

Shell (NYSE:SHEL) made its first power sector acquisition in Africa on Wednesday with the purchase of Nigerian renewable energy provider Daystar Power for an undisclosed sum, Financial Times reports, as Shell expands its global renewables portfolio.

Daystar provides off-grid power to commercial and industrial clients in Nigeria, Ghana, Togo and Senegal, offering solar and hybrid power solutions with battery storage.

The cash inflow from Shell (SHEL) will help Daystar increase its installed solar capacity to 400 MW by 2025 from 32 MW currently and expand services beyond West Africa to the eastern and southern parts of the continent.

The deal for Daystar is "a fundamental step for Shell in growing our presence in emerging power markets," said Thomas Brostrom, Shell's (SHEL) executive VP for renewable generation.

"Contrary to popular opinion, it looks like a good time to sell Shell, despite its attractive valuation," Manika Premsingh writes in a bearish analysis posted recently on Seeking Alpha.

A Swiss pumped-storage power station, which can both produce electricity and store power from other sources, has been officially inaugurated.

This content was published on September 9, 2022 - 14:39 September 9, 2022 - 14:39
swissinfo.ch/mga

The Nant de Drance hydroelectric plant in western Switzerland has been operational since July. Its turbines can generate 900 megawatts of electricity per hour by releasing water from an upper reservoir through dam sluice gates.

This is a similar amount of electricity production as the Gösgen nuclear power plant in Switzerland, making Nant de Drance one of the largest power producers in Europe.

The Nant de Drance facility can also store power by pumping the water back up to the reservoir ready for re-use when more electricity is needed. The storage capacity of the plant is equivalent to more than 400,000 car batteries.

It was built to cope with fluctuations in wind and solar-power supply and help stabilise electricity output Europe-wide.

It could, for example, store surplus energy from solar plants in Europe to be later released when the sun is not shining.

The Nant de Drance station is built in a remote region of canton Valais at an elevation of 2,225 metres above sea level next to the Vieux Emosson reservoir.

Deutsche Telekom and Ericsson combine wind and solar for 5G site

by Harry Baldock, Total Telecom

Monday 23 May 22

The duo has successfully modified a live 5G mobile site, integrating both solar and wind energy generation equipment, as well as the software to optimise supply and demand

When it comes to sustainability, for telcos the largest challenge is reducing the energy consumption of their ever-growing networks.

Many of the largest operators around the world, including the likes of Orange, Vodafone, and Deutsche Telekom, have already committed to reducing their carbon emissions to net-zero by 2040 – a target that will be very difficult to achieve without rethinking the way in which they view network energy consumption.

With this in mind, Deutsche Telekom and Ericsson have today announced a new collaboration, modifying a live 5G mobile site in Germany to support both wind and solar power generation and integration.

The site, situated in Dittenheim, had been part-powered by 12 square metres of solar panels for over a year as part of a previous partnership between the two companies. Now, a new trial has seen wind turbines added to further boost the site’s capacity for renewable energy usage.

The combined solution is facilitated by the Ericsson Power System, which jointly controls the two power sources and the batteries also integrated into the system. This not only allows for more optimised energy consumption from the various sources, but also allows the batteries as dynamic power storage units, storing renewable energy when available.

When conditions are right, the site can operate using energy from the renewable sources alone, without need to tap the electrical power grid.

“Ensuring an integrated management of clean, efficient and reliable power sources and usage is key for sustainable mobile site operations. Together with innovative partners we explore in trials how we can apply intelligent solutions and capabilities to optimize energy consumption and control at mobile sites,” said Leif Heitzer, SVP Technology Guidance and Economics at Deutsche Telekom.

Deutsche Telekom are not the only operator looking to incorporate renewable energy directly into their mobile sites. In November last year, Vodafone announced a similar project with renewable energy specialist Crossflow Energy, which would allow the sites to be entirely powered by wind and solar energy. Coupled with the latest battery technology, the operator hopes that this solution could allow them to deploy sites in rural areas entirely unconnected to the local energy grid.
