I can't see a counter bid being launched. Talisman is probably the only company with a similar portfolio of big enough size to purchase PLR. Most of the majors are busy concentrating on trying to build up assets in Russia and other more promising development areas, so with PLR having most of its production in the North Sea, it's not attractive. Especially seeing as most of the assets are late life fields. The only companies that could be interested are supply companies - Centrica, Eon although I'm not sure PLR has enough gas production to interest these. The other possibility would be from Far East operations wanting a western cash cow in the resource sector - Japanese banks, Chinese industries/producers etc.

focus, you will be offered to sell them for 355 via your broker. There will be no broker commission to pay. I'm holding anyway, incase a counter bid does come in, but I suspect this is very much a done deal.

Ok.........put me in the picture please, does this mean our shares will be bought for around £3.50? By that i mean, should we sell or is it worth waiting to see if higher bid comes in? Or can we just hold onto the shares.

Not a lot IMO.....if they do they'll need to up the price by 10% or more, in order allow commitments to be ripped up legally.

Yes, nice 100% profit since mid May.

Dana, Tullow, JKX, Burren, Emerald are other stock that I hold and trade. Tullow another possible target for takeover. Emerald I expect to break out next year.
All good bets and varyingly undervalued with good prospects.

All IMHO

OK got the Caledonia news.

Big price! Surprised DNX had been falling in the wake of that!

Hi farsight, if you can spot a good entry price on DNX it's the best of the oil cos outside the majors. IMHO DYOR

I bought some a week ago and then topped up yesterday at 2.75 What a suprise to see all that blue in my portfolio today. I am not one to ramp a share but for those of you looking for another oily that just might do the same as PLR and happens to be very cheap at the moment try Dragon Oil DGO It got badly hammered yesterday providing a good buying op. and is in a strong financial posiyion with good assets and a lot of companies sniffing about. But do your own research etc.

huh! I bought Palladin around 18 and 24p... and sold at under 70p. ( ok, 300% gains) Never been back - long termers have done the best.

I'll confess that this offer has come about two or three years earlier than I anticipated but ultimately, this is why I bought the share way back when it was 80p. Without getting greedy, I'd be interested to see if anyone else is interested in bidding as well.

I know you shouldn't get sentimental towards shares but if Paladin does get taken out, I'd be sad to see it leave my portfolio having been the stalwart for the past few years delivering excellent capital growth (and a nominal dividend thrown in).

I'm not a follower of Paladin so I don't know the fundamanetals here. Would anyone know offhand what their proven & probable reserves are ... am trying to work out what Talisman might be paying per barrel of p&p + premium for exploration acreage? I would appreciate any information.

Monty, where oil and gas is concerned there is silly money around, look at the recent purchase of Caledonia by EON, also Kerr McGee was sold for top dollar.

Humans burn hydrocarbons, and they cant stop.

What a different a day makes....

My only regret is having a large chunk of my PLR holding outside PEP/ISA accounts, so there will be a contingent CGT hit. The loan note alternative will help to manage that, but it's still years and years worth of the annual CGT allowance for both myself and my wife.

With EDG gone (much too cheaply) earlier this year, and now PLR going, I'm running out of oilies ! Oh, and well done to the PLR management.

jeeez - and how many holders looked at things yesterday, then the chart and bailed?

Always amazes me that these takeovers of good companies happen when they are priced at all-time highs. Where were these muppets when PLR was trading around 30-50p, not that long ago. Now they have paid 10 times as much....

Congrats to holders etc etc,

Smith Barney Starts Paladin, Tullow At Buy

Thursday, October 06, 2005 2:02:12 AM ET
Dow Jones Newswires

0548 GMT [Dow Jones] Smith Barney initiates coverage of Paladin Resources

(PLR.LN) and Tullow Oil (TLW.DB) with buy ratings, and 365p and 305p targets respectively. Notes the European exploration and production sector has risen by around 80% year-to-date together with the rise in crude prices. Against this backdrop "only 10% separates the performance of Cairn, Tullow and Paladin shares, despite very different investment propositions." Focusing on company fundamentals, it still sees value in the sector in Tullow and Paladin, and reiterates Cairn's (CNE.LN) sell rating. Paladin closed at 298.5p, Tullow at 243.75p, and Cairn at 1924p. (PBA)
