Shares portfolio: World Cup shocks score for PartyGaming

07.07.10

With World Cup big guns Italy, France and - yes - England knocked out early on, the boost to PartyGaming's sports arm makes its shares a good bet.

The Standard's City team rates which stocks to buy and sell, with analysis on the top traders' deals and what to expect from the markets.

BUY: PartyGaming

Place your bets on PartyGaming, says Liberum Capital. The internet gambling group yesterday reported strong growth from its casino arm, but said its online poker tables had been hit hard by the World Cup.

Liberum says PartyGaming's sports arm has been boosted by surprising World Cup results. Analyst Richard Taylor said the results were a "shade light" of forecasts, but "certainly no disaster".

GEETANJALI SHARMA | EXECUTION NOBLE
"We continue to like PartyGaming's market position and would expect gaming revenues to start stabilising post World Cup as we had highlighted before. Overall, a messy but fair statement from PartyGaming and we remain buyers. Poker is weakest with USD decline of 15-17 per cent. However, this is being compensated by Casino.
Bingo and Sports performance is broadly in line with expectations."

GEORGE GODBER | MATTERLEY ASSET MANAGEMENT
"For PartyGaming, the US legislation is the big thing because the betting market is so massive there. If the ban is lifted, as the governmnet realizes how much tax it can raise on betting, then the company is very well placed. It's a cash generative, strong business and the business model is absolutely superb. Obviously the World Cup has produced record volumes and betting is becoming a very big success story.:

GREG FEEHELY | ALTIUM SECURITIES
"PartyGaming is a strong brand and I wouldn't bet against it. It has a strong cash business and although the World Cup hasn't heped it will be okay. It has strategic value and would be a good takeover for bwin or other companies with an interest in sports betting. I'm glad to see that it is reporting in euros now so it is much easier for investors and analysts to see exactly what is going on. We'll obviously have to see what happens with gaming legislation in the US, but on the whole the company is due a bit of a bounce and is in good shape."

Agree barf. It's business speak for "we can't find anyone to do a deal with us". Still long though.

"Whilst progress on consolidating the online gaming industry has been slower than expected, we remain committed to playing an active role and are continuing to pursue opportunities with a number of parties," said Chief Executive Jim Ryan.

Hasn't he been saying the same thing since he got the job? and isn't that the same trite statement Garber was coming out with for ages before he went?

Big difference between saying you are committed and actually getting on with it.

i think Frauchi10 is aloud to express what ever feeling he wants on party as long as he can support his point. he can be overly positive or overly negative. this board isn't just for positive people.

i think myself its just short term jitters that is happening. im expecting it to bounce back within short space once revenue streams are secured and news filters out about mergers/acquisitions

I'm keeping the faith and riding this out.

Frauchi10 are you short? I've never seen you before a few days ago and you're too negative. Be careful if you have a short on this one - the casino offering may not have performed so bad ;)

As I was saying ....

"Grizzly Bare - 25 Jun'10 - 08:12 - 15280

Lower lows and lot of stock on loan in May.
Looks like going lower to me."

...and the market today giving further indication that the bwin/prty merger is stalling!!! Could we see sub 200p?

there is a huge correlation between pokerplayer numbers and share price also if some people at this board don't see it this way.

bad financials are not priced in so far, if company announces bad figures next week then this one is below 200p

320p to 220p in about 2 months, I guess people are expecting bad financials like 888 just warned, otherwise there is no real reason for a 30% is there ?

Thanks, evox. It does, in a way. The 6-month chart makes PRTY look cheap, but the one above makes the share price look average. I find it useful to gaze at the charts and ignore the noise. The sharp drops, even in downward trends, are often followed by sharp rises, which is why I am more interested in 888 at the moment.

It would be useful to see a longer term PRTY chart on here.

On the acquisition and merger front, Austria's bwin and the 4th largest online poker company, PartyGaming, have been talking extensively of late

talks haven't exactly collapsed but an agreement hasn't yet been reached:

However, I'd say bwin would be better off buying 888 at those levels to get a casino behemoth and re-organising the business!

RNS Number : 3050O PartyGaming Plc 28 June 2010

28 June 2010

PartyGaming Plc

('PartyGaming' or the 'Group')

French online poker and sports betting licences awarded to Partygaming.

PartyGaming, the world's leading listed online gaming company, announces that it has been awarded licences by ARJEL, the French Gaming regulator, to operate online poker and sports betting websites for residents in France. The Group can offer sports betting immediately and will offer poker on www.partypoker.fr when the market is opened, which is expected to be later this month.

As previously announced, the Group has signed three exclusive B2B deals this year to form a significant French poker network with PMU, the country's largest pari-mutuel horse racing company, AB Groupe, a leading TV broadcaster, and Aviation Club de France, one of France's most prestigious card rooms and private members clubs. This network will now benefit from pooled poker player liquidity that will be provided by www.partypoker.fr

Party/Bwin
Perhaps Party has bigger fish to fry in the US than merging and it seems Bwin are following suit.
