14/11/2007 10:27 | Burberry H1 operating profit up 13 pct; on track to achieve FY hopes UPDATE (Adds detail throughout) LONDON (Thomson Financial) - Burberry Group PLC, the global fashion brand, has reported an expected 13 pct increase in first half operating profit before one-off costs, reiterated its guidance for the second half and said it is on track to achieve its full year profit expectations, sending its shares nearly 4 pct higher. For the six months to Sept 30 2007 the group made an operating profit before costs relating to its Project Atlas infrastructure redesign project of 95.1 mln stg -- an increase of 19 pct at constant exchange rates. This compares to analyst forecasts of 90-100 mln stg and 84.2 mln stg achieved in the same period last year. Pretax profit increased 31 pct to 95.8 on total revenue up 15 pct to 449.1 mln stg, driven by phenomenal demand for luxury handbags and shoes. Top sellers were The Knight Bag, flying off the shelves at 1,595 stg each, The Beaton Bag at 1,095 stg, the Medieval Clutch Bag at 795 stg, and the Ashcombe Bag at 350 stg. Sales of luxury handbags now make up 50-60 pct of handbag sales in Burberry's European and US stores compared to less than 40 pct a year ago. "What we're doing is filling out the pyramid," chief financial officer Stacey Cartwright told reporters. | taffee | |
