IPSA - Power woes in South Africa give IPSA a boost
21-Feb-2008
IPSA is very well placed to become a significant player in the private electricity-generating sector of the biggest economy in Africa – South Africa

This kind of story regarding big SA mines losing power from Eskom must be pushing miners to consider setting up private power supply arrangements (?) until grid supply can be considered 'reliable' again...

Does anyone know what sort of power demands such mining operations have, and whether any of the short term temporary solutions mentioned recently by IPSA would be attractive to them?

I'm hoping the results in the coming fortnight or so may mention such possible deals...

yes the "things" -they will need to know how to play the system!

I suspect the official BEE announcements are only the official tip of a larger unofficial iceberg. But then if you want to sign big deals with the government......

Woodsman -Don't get Me wrong, I think this is a great company, in the right place, at the right time. But I don't think it will be a bed of roses and I would like to see how they plan to fund things (and by "things" I mean official and not.).

Will be watching this like a hawk though.

Kasman,

Dont disagree with your points, however, I think there is ample room for IPSA to grow and prosper. Obviously SA has great potential for solar but even if they went great guns over this, the likely industrial growth of the country alongside inreasing wealth (i.e. air con, dishwashers, wahsing machines etc etc will lead to very siginificant increases in power demand over and above what can be provided in the medium term by solar.

As for nuclear, as Solotrom says if you think about building one today, it wont be online for 15 years if you are lucky!

kasman:

Perhaps you should read a couple of RNSs....?

The one of 3 Sep 2007 (for example) should explain that IPSA appear to be quite well on top of the BEE requirements, and have it factored-in.

Maybe you would also like to investigate how long the new nuclear plant will take to build, commission, and start putting power onto the grid? IPSA are demonstrating that they can source power plants and get them online quickly, which is a fantastic position to be in with SA's lack of power. Fortunately for IPSA, SA have failed to plan for the known power shortage, and hence they need power generation solutions immediately, to overcome the shortage that is with them right now.

No rain falling here...

BEE requirements could be a major hurdle though. It would have to have a "black" south african company to partner with. this black company will probably be "formed" by government officials unofficially. There will probably be a dilution here to Buy a stake in this BEE company so that the combined company will be given the go-ahead.

Lots of South africans now installing solar heating (My neighbours installing one this very second as i type this looking out of my balcony), this will eventually have the effect of decreasing the need for load shedding here.

We're also contemplating building a second nuclear power generator here.

Sorry to rain on everyones parade.

Smelleroo,

I was in this one from the start and intend to stay in long term. The only thing that stopped me from topping up recently however was exactly your concern as to the financing. Obviously, money is harder to come by now and more expensive. However, good business plans supported by good management will still be able to raise the cash - I firmly belieive IPSA has both of these.

Given SA's obvious and growing power requirements, I think that in the medium to long run this company has the potential to grow exponentially and I am quietly confident that this will be a multibagger for those patient enough to hold long term.

i very much liked what i have read so far good business model and seemingly top and experienced mangement. does anyone have any views on how the company will go about financing their planned projects as they are highly capital intensive? also i fear the political aspect in south africa, primarily if the chief of eskom is best friends with mbeki or zuma could they prevent private operators entering electricity generation in south africa?
