Temporary cessation of mining at Number 1 and 2 shafts of Beatrix Gold Mine

Gold Fields Limited (JSE - GFI and Nasdaq - GOLD) advises that, following an
accident on Tuesday, 8 May 2001, in which 12 people tragically lost their
lives, the Chief Inspector of Mines has ordered the temporary cessation of
mining at the Number 1 and 2 shafts of the Beatrix Gold Mine.

The order was issued in terms of section 54(1)(a) of the Mine Health and
Safety Act 29 of 1996, pending the preliminary findings of an investigation
into the causes of the accident. In compliance with the order, operations were
halted with effect from 15:00 on Friday, 11 May 2001.

The Beatrix Gold Mine, which is near Virginia in the Free State Province of
South Africa, has three operating shafts and produces approximately 500,000
ounces of gold per annum.

Operations at the newly commissioned Beatrix Number 3 shaft are unaffected.
