A new European powerhouse in the electrical goods market will take shape on Thursday as the merger of Dixons Retail and Carphone Warehouse formally completes.
When Dixons Carphone begins trading, it will draw a line under a tumultuous period in the sector that began with Carphone Warehouse's ill-fated alliance with Best Buy, the biggest electricals chain in the United States, in 2008.
Sebastian James, of Dixons, and Andrew Harrison, of Carphone, will be joined in corporate matrimony at a ceremony at the London stock exchange on Thursday morning.
The combined company will have 42,500 staff in Britain, Ireland, Scandinavia, Germany and Greece and annual sales of more than £10 billion. The market value will be about £4 billion, putting it in contention for a place in the FTSE 100.
One topic of conversation unlikely to be raised during the nuptials is Carphone's tryst with Best Buy. Carphone was supposed to offer its expertise in selling mobile phones to the American group, which in turn would introduce its supposedly superior customer service to the UK through a store-opening programme.
Best Buy aborted its attempt to conquer Britain in 2011 after opening only 11 stores as the recession and John Browett's transformation of Dixons took their toll.
Dixons' management had a champagne toast on the morning that Best Buy threw in the towel. This time the champagne is flowing because Dixons and Carphone believe that a combined operation will leave them ideally positioned as home technology becomes increasingly online and interconnected.
"Thursday will be an historic day for us as Dixons Carphone begins trading and we set sail on an exciting new journey towards what I hope will be the first and best-connected world shopping experience," Mr James said.
"We are passionate about delivering a seamless experience for our customers and focused on helping them navigate the merging mobile and technology markets, to find integrated products and services that can really enhance their lives."

A new era in consumer electronics begins tomorrow when Carphone Warehouse and the owner of Currys and PC World join forces under a £3.9 billion merger.

The new name of Dixons Carphone will begin trading on the London Stock Exchange and feature 3,000 stores from the businesses of Dixons Retail Group and Carphone Warehouse.

Dixons Carphone, which employs around 43,500 staff across Europe, aims to tap into the way technology will transform households by fusing the mobile phone and electrical goods sectors in what is called the "Internet of Things".

The firm will look to adapt to a new world where smartphones, tablets and rapid internet speeds will mean appliances such as washing machines and fridges are controlled by the touch of a mobile device.

Such a retail behemoth would be expected to have more power to stand up to online competition from electrical retail rivals such as AO World.

Dixons chief executive Sebastian James will run the new group, while Carphone founder Sir Charles Dunstone, will be its chairman.

When the merger was announced in May, Mr James said: "The ability to take what we have built in electrical retailing and add the profound expertise of Carphone Warehouse in connectivity would make us a leading force in retailing for a connected world."

The merger is expected to deliver combined yearly savings of £80 million although there will be restructuring costs of £55 million to £60 million and extra investment of £70 million to £80 million.

Carphone Warehouse was founded by Sir Charles in 1989, and has around 2,000 stores, including more than 800 in the UK. Dixons, founded in the 1930s, has 943 stores in seven countries, including more than 500 in the UK.

Carphone's high street presence is not seen as overlapping with Dixons's out-of-town stores by analysts, so the two sets of shop portfolios are seen as complementary.

The combination of the two FTSE 250 firms is likely to create a new FTSE 100-sized group, as well as merger savings to please investors.

Independent analyst Louise Cooper said at the time of the merger deal that there was "likely to be much scepticism" about plans for better growth through putting the businesses together.

She said: "Two past their sell-by date retailers merging does not an Amazon make."

A link up with BT would probably be lucrative.

BT appears to be making a strong move to return to the high street. Sources suggest that a collaboration with EE its MVNO partner is on the cards. Other possible retail partners in the frame include Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4u.

EE and BT signed the MVNO deal ten months ago, and sources claim that talks about a retail partnership quickly followed.

An increasingly confident BT has been pushing itself forward recently with unabashed confidence. There's the recent launch into the mobile market, with the BT One Phone for the b2b market, and a huge campaign based on its TV sports channel. Expect a consumer mobile launch later in 2015.

BT already has just under 100K business customers with about 7million customers on fixed lines. This makes it very attractive to retail partners, especially as there's the added bonus of including mobile packages with BT Sport and BT TV content included.

In turn, a retail partnership would give BT access to a wider group for its quad-play mobile, broadband, and fixed line products, along with the sport and TV.

According to one source in the retail sector: 'Talks between BT and EE have looked at partially or wholly selling BT's quad-play offerings in stores. The mix works well and both companies can see this. The agreement now hinges on what works best for both sides.'

However, it isn't a done deal according to another player in this market. They claim that BT is still exploring deals with Phones 4u and Dixons-Carphone as possible partners. 'It is well known that the BT wants to make a high street comeback. Dixons-Carphone could be better suited to the arrangement, as the stores can offer the space BT wants to show all its quad-play range.'

BT faces some tough competition at the moment against other quad-play providers. One competitor Virgin Media already has over 70 stores. Industry analysts feel this high street return is necessary for BT.
'Faced up against its rivals, BT is lacking only one ingredient. Retail space,' says CCS Insight's director of operator strategy, Paolo Pescatore. 'Front-facing capabilities aren't optional if they really do want to compete seriously in this market. There's no way to do this without a retail outlet on the high street.'

For strategy analytics analyst Neil Mawston this move is a no-brainer for BT. The benefits are clear for both companies. 'EE has several hundred stores, and this will instantly widen BT's distribution.'

'BT also gets a partner well established in the retail sector, and already in tune with the market trend towards show-room style stores. A partnership would take BT straight into the game, instead of having to start from scratch rolling out its own stores.'

Marston also felt that for EE, the move would help make the most of its push into the b2b sector, with BT's ready base of 900,000 mobile business customers.

EE was unable to offer a comment, and BT could not be reached.

hxxp://www.retail-week.com/stores/in-pictures-carphone-warehouse-unveils-exciting-and-energetic-digital-format/5062982.article?blocktitle=Latest-news-&-analysis&contentID=13145

Carphone Warehouse is rolling out a new digital format across 200 of its stores as it seeks to create a slick and simplified experience.

Stores are being installed with interactive screens that can be updated with live tariff prices, which Carphone Warehouse checks three times a day at its head office.

Customers can also read up-to-date online customer reviews of phones on the interactive screens, as well as look up handset specifications.

The news comes as Carphone Warehouse's merger with Dixons is expected to be formalised tomorrow with the new company's first day of trading on the stock exchange.

The revamped stores include phones that customers can play with to give them a feel for the handset. Previously the retailer only had two live phones on display, both of which were iPhones. The other display models are typically dummy phones.

Speaking at one of the revamped stores in London's Brent Cross, Carphone Warehouse marketing director Julian Diment told Retail Week: "This has allowed us to bring the excitement and energy of smartphones to life through a lot more live devices and great technology."

The retailer hired design agency Fitch to create the new store format and will be introducing it to a quarter of its 771-store estate within the next few months.

Staff tablets
The interactive screens are complemented by the retailer's assisted sales tool Pin Point, which comes pre-installed on Sony tablets that are used by all in-store sales assistants.

Pin Point was introduced six months ago and allows the sales assistant to ask questions to guide the customer through what tariff and phone works best for them.

Diment claims Pin Point has helped the retailer increase in-store net promoter scores to 73 since it was introduced, representing an increase of roughly 10% across six months.

It is expected that eventually Pin Point will allow Carphone Warehouse to complete the entire transaction on the tablet and in the process remove the need for tills, allowing a smaller store size.

At present Carphone Warehouse stores are between 500 sq ft and 1,500 sq ft in size.

Fitch design director Nathan Watts said: "Carphone Warehouse has been working hard to ensure it gives its customers the interactive but simple experience that they want.

"Design is so often an additive process, however, Brent Cross was all about stripping back and delivering a single-minded approach to content. The design is focused on giving the customer a slick and simplified experience, with technology and digital interaction at the heart of the whole offering."

I was at a book launch yesterday with Sir John Mortimer ( old Harrovian) and I told him it was time for an OH or OE to be in charge again.
Despite voting Labour all his klife, he is in utter despair at Bliar's betrayal of every Socialist principle.
