Event Report: Earthquake in New Zealand
The Company today received the following report from Credit Suisse AG ('Credit Suisse'), the investment manager of CS IRIS Low Volatility Plus Fund Limited (the 'Master Fund'), in which the Company invests substantially all of its assets.
Opinions expressed in the report are those of Credit Suisse AG.
"Today a magnitude 6.5 earthquake occurred south of Blenheim, New Zealand, as the result of strike-slip faulting on or near the plate boundary between the Pacific and Australia plates. This region of New Zealand has experienced a number of small to moderately sized earthquakes in recent weeks, including a magnitude 6.5 earthquake approximately 40 km east of the Cook Strait, on July 21, 2013. The main quake of today's event lasted for two or three minutes with aftershocks following every few minutes which were felt on both sides of the Cook Strait. The ensuing exodus from cities, especially in Wellington, has caused traffic disruptions in the suburbs as drivers tried to avoid the motorway by using back streets.
About 1'000 people are without power in the Seddon area (25 km south of Blenheim) as reported by power lines company Marlborough Lines. Power access to a further 3'000 who had lost power immediately after the quake has now been restored. The New Zealand Transport Agency State Highway is undertaking structural checks of all its highways and assets including bridges and tunnels this afternoon.
Damage at this stage appears to be restricted to a few central areas in Wellington where there is broken glass on the roads. Wellington police say there are no reports of significant damage so far following this afternoon's magnitude 6.5 earthquake. Mayor Wade-Brown said there had been initial reports of some superficial damage to buildings but there have been no reports of any major damage so far, nor injuries.
It is still too early to get a precise picture of the event, but we will closely monitor the situation and inform investors of any significant changes. At the moment, we do not anticipate any impact on the IRIS Low Volatility Plus from this event."
