Based on the opening price, it seems like the delayed trade wasn't a buy but sells.

Inventory was fairly consistent on a turns basis to PY taking account of the higher sales volume. To grow inventory even 5% they would need to bulk purchase in one hit around 75,000 new iphones and not shift a single one :)

smarty of course not ...

Just notice that DC seem to have ever increasing inventory. (1.1billion at last results)

I am simply making the point and have seen inventory get businesses into trouble before. Especially as electronic goods depreciate so fast.

And that the arrival of the iphone8 is as much of an opportunity for a business like this to lose money as it is to make it.

In 2012 there was much hoo-ha about tablets at the old Dixons. Well Dixons made virtually no money out of tablets as it turned out and it was all a big hoo ha for nothing

Made much more money out of food mixers as the Great British Bake off was getting into it's stride..

Yes I was an investor here in 2012

Research is good
But also a little common sense or basic business knowledge may help
Do you think that Mr Dixon drives over to Mr Apples place in a big van, loads up 200,000 phones, pays for the whole load there and then, and waves good bye ?

undervalued - Supply is normally heavily constrained in the first couple of months for new iphones so disagree on your point regarding inventory, then they will get a feel on forward orders and demand based on success (or not) of the initial roll out.

Production always takes time to ramp up on the new phones.

Of course Apple make money out of the new phone. It is their phone!

As the most desired smartfone on the planet Apple will set onerous terms to third party retailers.

Currys will have to pay upfront for their iphone 8's.

Say they pay £700 per phone.

If they buy 200,000 of them (not unreasonable amount give the scale of CPW) that is a £140 million outlay. £140 million.

Apple have their money and DC. have taken all the risk. Why:-

Well let's say they sell the iphone8 for £800 giving themselves a gross margin of £100 per phone or 12% (unlikely - likely to be much smaller ) that means they have sell 175,000 phones before they break even.

If they only sell 100,000 phones it is a genuine disaster.

Equally if they stock too few then they risk the competition stealing the show from under their feet and not making the profit they should have done.

It won't work exactly like that but big launches like this have the potential to ruin companies who mishandle the inventory.

Then - And this is potentially the worst outcome and one that DC cannot control - If the British market as a whole (all the phone companies and all the retailers) over estimates the demand and buys too many iphone of Apple then we end up with too many phones in the market. Then the retailers will slash prices and cut each others throats to get rid of excess inventory.

Happens all the time.

In a different story but with the same kind of the same outcome. But Dorling Kindersley went bust on the strength of one print run that was too large and left them with massive unsold inventory.

Aero Inventory - a company that supplied inventory to the Airlines - went bust cos it mishandled/mispriced it's inventory.

I have never filtered anyone.

Filtering is like the kid at school who puts his fingers in his ears, closes his eyes and goes " Nah Nah...nah Nah Nah" because he does not like he hears.

I want to hear what everyone has to say - cogent, logical, well informed and rational obviously. But I also want hear the nonsense and the funny stuff too and of course i want to hear opinions different to my own. . . Once I have heard it all I do something really radical.. I have a bit of think and then I make up my mind.

Not filtering people gives me the option to do something even more radical - it gives me the option to change my mind.

Filtering people is potentially risky as you are really just putting your head in sand.

And It means that you potentially risk not hearing the truth.
