ClearSpeed Technology plc

Key order secured with Tokyo Institute of Technology

ClearSpeed Technology plc ("ClearSpeed" or "the Group", AIM: CSD), a leader in
high-performance co-processors for supercomputing applications, has secured an
order to supply a number of ClearSpeed X620 Advance accelerator boards for
$700,000 to Tokyo Institute of Technology (TITECH) for use in its Molecular
Dynamics Simulation Acceleration System.

ClearSpeed's boards are being sold to TITECH as part of the Institute's
upgrading programme for its supercomputer, TSUBAME. The Institute had planned
from the outset that its new system could have its performance upgraded to meet
new computing needs, and this order is the first such upgrade. In order to
achieve this, the system has to be very power and space efficient. The
capability of ClearSpeed's boards to be installed and add performance, while
making no difference to the size of the system and a minimal difference to its
power consumption and cooling, was important at the time of the initial order
and equally important for this order.

The TSUBAME supercomputer is one of the largest university-based computing
clusters ever built. The supercomputer is used for compute-intensive
applications in a variety of research areas, including bio-science,
nano-science, environmental and disaster prevention simulations. The system is
intended to be accessible to every professor and student at the Tokyo Institute
of Technology, as well as to a wide range of researchers throughout the world.

Nissho Electronics is ClearSpeed's reseller in Japan for this order.

Tom Beese, ClearSpeed Chief Executive Officer, commented:

"This is a key order for us as not only is the TSUBAME system one of the largest
supercomputers worldwide, but the order is a clear confirmation of the value of
our technology both at the time of first purchase of a system and in upgrades
throughout its life."

About ClearSpeed Technology

ClearSpeed Technology designs high-performance accelerators that work alongside
conventional computer processors (CPUs) in some of the world's most demanding
applications. ClearSpeed's advanced technologies offer significantly higher
computing speeds than the most powerful CPUs, but use far less electrical power.
Based in Bristol and San Jose, the company has 84 patents granted or pending and
its products include computer chips, boards, software tools, applications and
support.

The ClearSpeed AdvanceTM Accelerator Board sits alongside conventional computer
processors and handles complex mathematical routines, dramatically increasing
the speed of applications.

At the heart of the AdvanceTM Accelerator Board are two ClearSpeed CSX600 chips,
each with 96 processor cores that work in parallel to solve complex mathematical
problems. A single CSX600 chip can perform more than 37.5 billion high-precision
calculations per second (37.5 GFLOPS), whilst typically using less than ten
watts of power - an unprecedented performance ratio unmatched by any rival
system.

As a result, ClearSpeed's AdvanceTM Board has the potential to deliver
significant performance improvements in fields such as financial market trading,
drug discovery, engineering and exploration, where users are demanding
higher-speed computing at lower costs.

The ClearSpeed AdvanceTM Board is currently offered as a plug-in board that can
be easily fitted as an upgrade to a workstation, server or cluster.

The TSUBAME cluster comprises 655 Sun Microsystems X4600 servers, each with
eight dual core AMD OpteronTM processors, each delivering almost 60GFLOPS of
performance, and consuming approximately 800KW of power in total. The cluster's
360 ClearSpeed AdvanceTM accelerator boards each deliver 25.5 GigaFLOPS (GFLOPS)
of performance, increasing the cluster's overall performance by 24% while adding
only 1% to the overall power consumption. An earlier benchmark using just 350
of the cluster's systems, each equipped with one ClearSpeed Advance board
delivered a result of 29.45 TFLOPS, representing a performance improvement of
almost 50% over the non-accelerated systems.
