Apple unveils new iPhone 3G with GPS and a lower priceBobbie Johnson, Technology correspondent guardian.co.uk, Monday June 9 2008 Article history

The next generation iPhone will include faster internet access, satellite navigation – and a drastic drop in price.

Speaking on stage at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference Steve Jobs, the chief executive of iPod maker Apple, unveiled the new iPhone 3G – a cheaper, more powerful replacement for the handset launched a year ago.

Internet speculation had been rife about the new features that might be included on the high-end touchscreen handset, but in the end some of the rumours – such as built-in video calling - proved wide of the mark.

As reported in the Guardian, the new model will include GPS satellite navigation as well as faster 3G internet connection and a suite of software improvements.

But the biggest news was the sharp drop in the headline price of the phone itself. The iPhone 3G will cost just $199 (£100) – half the current $399 retail price in US shops.

The iPhone currently costs £269 in the UK, and although an Apple spokeswoman said British prices would be announced at a later date, it is understood that the phone is likely to be available for a variety of different prices depending on which tariff customers sign up to.

"We did figure out what our next challenges are – the next mountain we have to climb," said Jobs at the end of a two-hour event in San Francisco. "The number one reason people didn't buy the iPhone was that they couldn't afford it, so we need to make the iPhone more affordable."

The news was welcomed by industry observers, who are keen for the gadget to fulfil the hype generated over the past 18 months. But the changes reveal some of the difficulties that Apple – which has been flying high for the best part of a decade on the success of its iPod music player – has found with moving into the phone industry.

"If Apple knows about nothing else, it knows how to generate and exploit hype. But to make a better version available for European consumers makes sense," said John Delaney, an analyst with IDC. "Having only achieved six million sales – and most of them in the US – I think they feel a need to light a fire underneath

Hours before Apple's big WWDC keynote who would've guessed Samsung would do this...? Yep - everyone.

Still, much like the 'accidentally leaked' snaps of the touchscreen BlackBerry Thunder late Sunday evening, so Samsung has decided to push out its most credible next generation iPhone challenger to date: the 'i900', dubbed 'Omnia'.

Already spotted earlier this month the i900 lives up to its billing with a large (though not iPhone large) 3.2in haptic touch enabled touchscreen display, GPS, 7.2Mbit HSDPA, WiFi, Bluetooth A2DP and a choice of either 8GB or 16GB of internal storage. Backing this up are an advanced 5MP camera with autofocus, image stabilisation and geo-tagging and a snazzy reworking of the Windows Mobile 6.1 OS.

All the usual multimedia codec support is in there too along with the pleasant surprise of DivX and XviD combined with handset based video editing as Sammy goes for the jugular. A TV Out port, push email, accelerometer and FM tuner may also win it many hearts and minds unless Apple comes up with something spectacular (and heavily subsidised) tonight.

Whetting appetites the i900 was officially released in Samsung's native Korea today but while no formal European launch date was given a Q3 timeframe has been put on its head. Of course Samsung has been down this Cupertino-inspired route before with the glorious-on-paper-but-lacking-in-reality F490. Let's hope it has now learnt from those fairly culpable UI mistakes.

Just how well has it done? We'll know in four hours, 30 minutes and counting...

Apple expected to unveil faster iPhone today
Product could bring a windfall of new revenue to Rogers
TECHNOLOGY REPORTER; TELECOM REPORTER

June 9, 2008

In what could be the worst-kept technology secret of the year, Apple Inc. chief executive officer Steve Jobs is expected to unveil the next evolution of the company's game-changing iPhone today.

The updated iPhone will almost certainly run on the most advanced wireless networks yet available, and will promise customers the ability to surf the Web and stream video at speeds comparable to home broadband connections.

Analysts say the "3G" iPhone will give Apple the technology it needs to become a global cellphone powerhouse, and for Rogers Wireless Communications Inc., the Canadian carrier of the device, iPhone version 2.0 represents a potential windfall of new revenue.

Although most analysts expect Mr. Jobs will show off the new iPhone when he delivers the keynote address at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference today, what new features will be included in the updated version of the touch-screen device, whether the company will continue to sell its older 2G models, and when it will arrive in Canada all remain unknown.

"Apple plays their cards very close to the vest," said Van Baker, a senior analyst with market research firm Gartner Inc. "Those are all open questions."

Among the rumoured new features are a front-facing camera for video calling, larger storage capacity than the current eight GB and 16 GB models and a GPS chip - which would provide better location-based capability than the device's current cellphone tower triangulation technology.

Mr. Jobs will also likely demonstrate a number of new third-party applications developed by non-Apple programmers that will be available via the iPhone Application Store, also expected to be unveiled at the conference.

The new Apps store will allow iPhone users to download Apple-sanctioned software such as games, news feeds and mapping programs through the iTunes music store.

Since going on sale in the United States on June 29 last year, the iPhone has captured 20 per cent of the U.S. smart phone market, and is a rising global star, accounting for more than 5 per cent of the worldwide market for Internet-enabled cellphones in the first three months of 2008, says market research firm IDC.

Mr. Jobs' stated goal is to sell 10 million iPhones by the end of 2008. Most observers say the company is on pace to sell 13 million to 15 million iPhones by the end of the year.

Since bottoming out below $116 (U.S.) in February, Apple's share price has ballooned 60 per cent, closing at $185.64 on Friday.

In addition to a new high-end model, Apple could also be prepping a smaller, less expensive iPhone, similar to the way the company produces both the iPod Touch music player as well as lower-cost Nano and Shuffle devices, said Kasper Jade, publisher of AppleInsider.com.

Canada is among a group of nearly 50 new markets the iPhone is expected to reach this year, a list that includes Japan, Spain, Australia and Egypt.

A 3G device is critical to Apple's global strategy since customers in many Asian and European markets are accustomed to faster Web browsing speeds than the existing iPhone offers.

Those limitations have disappointed some of the first phone companies to sell the iPhone, said Mark Goldberg, of telecom consulting firm Mark H. Goldberg and Associates.

Apple relents on iPhones subsidy
By Andrew Parker in London, Paul Taylor in New York and Richard Waters in San Francisco

Published: June 6 2008 22:39 | Last updated: June 6 2008 22:39

The new version of the Apple iPhone is set to be sold at significantly lower prices than the existing one, in a tacit acknowledgement by the US technology company that its previous sales strategy was not sustainable.

Apple has bowed to pressure from mobile phone operators and agreed they can subsidise the latest iPhone, expected to be unveiled by Steve Jobs, Apple's chief executive, on Monday.

The subsidy arrangements should increase Apple's chances of hitting its target of selling 10m iPhones during 2008.

The target has been made challenging by the global downturn. Apple has reported selling 1.7m iPhones so far this year.

Analysts said AT&T, the US mobile operator selling the iPhone, could provide a $200 subsidy on the handset, enabling it to go on sale to consumers for $200 or less. The first version costs US consumers $399 because there is no subsidy.

Apple has accepted that the new iPhone should be subsidised in the US and western Europe by the mobile operators who sell it to consumers, according to people familiar with the matter.

The operators are willing to bear the subsidy costs because the iPhone provides them with revenue opportunities such as advertising.

Apple has also forgone a portion of the monthly revenue paid to the operators by iPhone users, said people close to the situation.

Such arrangements have been in place between Apple and AT&T, O2 of the UK, France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom
