The following is a preliminary announcement of the result of the Company's
operations for the year ended 31st March, 1999:

No  dividend has been recommended by the Board of Directors on the paid-up share
capital of the Company as on 31 March, 1999. As already advised, the Register of
Members  of  the  Company at Calcutta will remain closed from  17 August to
31 August, 1999, both days inclusive, and during this period registration
of transfer of shares will remain suspended.

We  would  further advise that the Twenty-first Annual General  Meeting  of  the
Company  will  be  held on Thursday, 16 September, 1999 at  'Science  City  Main
Auditorium', JBS Haldane Avenue, P.O. G. K. Road, Calcutta 700 046.  A  copy  of
the press notification is attached (below).

                                  NOTICE

As  already  advised, the Register of Members of the Company at Calcutta will
remain closed from 17th August, 1999 to 31st August, 1999, both days inclusive,
in  connection with the Twenty-first Annual General Meeting of the Company to be
held on Thursday,  16 September, 1999 at 'Science City Main Auditorium',  JBS
Haldane  Avenue, P.O. G. K. Road, Calcutta 700 046. Registration of transfer  of
shares of the Company will remain suspended during this period.
