03/3/2011 09:46 | Clickatell offers to help SMB send mass SMS Small firms will be able to send 1,000 messages a month for $25, a much lower price than Clickatell's previous version. 2/28/2011 9:13:00 AM By: Matt Hamblen The original version of Communicator, on the market for 18 months, had fewer features than Communicator 2 and could cost more than $2,000 for set-up, a cost that Clickatell has reduced to attract more users. "A business can take an Excel spreadsheet and do an SMS campaign to communicate a priority message to all on the spreadsheet," he said. Competitors to Clickatell on SMS include Sybase 365, MBlox and Syniverse Technologies, although de Villiers contends that Clickatell is the leader in SMS for small and medium businesses. Clickatell also announced $12 million in venture funding from Sequoia Capital and DAG Ventures, among others, to help Clickatell expand into new service areas such as mobile transactions, especially in emerging markets. Clickatell is already profitable, but the investment funds will help expand SMS for mobile banking in countries similar to Kenya where 10 million people already use mobile SMS to make transactions, de Villiers said. In one example, he said that people with limited credit in many emerging markets use their cell phones to top off their pre-paid air cards by sending an SMS message. Thosecustomers will typically have an account at a remote bank that they visit rarely. The SMS message would go to the user's carrier to add more minutes to the air card, and the carrier would in turn electronically bill the user's bank account. SMS is already used by many banks in the U.S. to help customers track their accounts, de Villiers noted. A customer can use SMS to check a balance or to receive a bank SMS notification that a checking account has fallen below a pre-set balance, all without the need to open a browser or launch an app. "SMS is simple connectivity to anything in the cloud, and that includes tracking a package or reaching an account," de Villiers said. "It's super cool that you can use 160 characters to fetch anything in the back-end system." Matt Hamblen covers mobile and wireless, smartphones and other handhelds, and wireless networking for Computerworld. | ![]() adam

01/3/2011 10:13 | Hmmmm! One wants to take anonymous reviews in listings mags with a pinch of salt - they're usually written by the Manager! Do genuine customers really talk of "exceeding our expectations"? I haven't heard that phrase outside middle management awayday training days. 8-) | ![]() jeffian

14/2/2011 22:08 | no mention of revenue just # transactions. Deflationary environment for unit cost, implies revenues were not as bullish as # transactions the company processed 26 percent more transactions than in 2010 ...mobile transaction revenue across Europe grew by 12 percent Thin on facts, but I agree the (selective) blurb is bullish in tone. Nokia probably thought they were unassailable until reality dawned. I am praying this lot manage to IPO before we can say "obsolete". | ![]() adam

13/2/2011 13:44 | Maybe it is a sign of old age, but although I enjoy listening to the effusive Andrew Bud - Founder and head cheer-leader for mBlox - I am somewhat sceptical of his claim that so called Near Field Communication (NFC) for example contact-less payments would be anything other than very bad news for mBlox. This article though gives some indication that he may have a point. That texting - which is more reliable than internet connections can form part of the infrastructure. I'd prefer to travel than arrive with new technology and i'm still anxious to see mBlox off-loaded whilst it is plat de jour. | ![]() adam
09/2/2011 22:29 | It went up too quick too fast. 2010 revenues of $133M look similar to those forecast for mBlox for 2010. I think mBlox were expecting roughly 15% growth on the $110M revenues for 2009. NEW YORK (AP) - Shares of Motricity Inc. tumbled 18 percent Wednesday in premarket trading after the company said revenue would drop in the first quarter. The Bellevue, Wash. mobile data company expects first quarter revenue between $32 million and $33 million. That's down from revenue of $36 million in the final three months of 2010. Motricity also said it expected between $170 million and $180 million this year, up from $133 million in 2010. After the announcement, Baird analyst William Power cut his earnings expectations to 59 from 80 cents per share this year and to 90 cents from $1.33 per share in 2012... | hugepants

08/2/2011 22:04 | Motricity down a bit, but had a good run up. Results looks pretty good to me. Cash rich now and profitable. Adjusted EBITDA of $9.4m for the quarter. "We expect the growth rate in revenues to accelerate as we move through 2011. Our view is based on robust expected growth in international markets, particularly in the second half of the year, and additional revenue streams from enterprise customers and mobile advertising, offset by relatively flat results in our current US based carrier business. We are highly encouraged by early results from our new global carriers. For example, XL Axiata reported more than four million users in only twelve weeks since launch of XLGo! powered by Motricity. This usage data gives us confidence in our long term growth and profitability targets as our ability to monetize subscribers globally continues to increase," concluded Wuerc | ![]() adam
03/2/2011 14:09 | No didn't see that. Looks like full steam ahead for the bars business. Interims due next month. Hopefully more news on mblox then. | hugepants
03/2/2011 12:42 | I don't think they are obliged to release anything publicly. Here there is Companies House for private companies, but there is no USA equivalent. Motricity presenting at a Goldman Sachs technology conference. Might get some market information from that. I would like to see mBlox file for IPO already. I'm worried they will be left on the shelf. BTW if you didn't catch it :- This looks to be in addition to their existing Cambridge Fez club. | ![]() adam
01/2/2011 15:53 | Any idea when mBlox release their results. I think it was about this time last year when the news articles started appearing. Also Motricity share price has recovered. I see they made a $100M acquistion. | hugepants |
