DENNIS D SHIFFEL NAMED VICE PRESIDENT OF INVESTOR RELATIONS FOR ARCO

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 5/PRNewswire/ -- Dennis D. Shiffel, ARCO's Director of
Investor Relations since early 1996, has been named Vice President of Investor
Relations, it was announced today by Executive Vice President and Chief
Financial Officer Marie L. Knowles.

"This action more appropriately reflects the importance of Dennis's
responsibilities within ARCO and will help ensure that the investment community
recognises the significance of the role played by Investor Relations at ARCO",
said Knowles.

"Since assuming responsibility for Investor Relations two years ago, Dennis has
played a key role in our efforts to create and benefit from improved two-way
communications with the investor community and to enhance Wall Street's
understanding of ARCO. Dennis attends meetings of ARCO's Senior Management Group
and provides significant counsel to ARCO's leadership team.

"As ARCO continues it's focus on growth, global expansion and total shareholder
return, our Investor Relations efforts will assume an even more critical and
strategic role."

Schiffel, who received a PhD in Economics from Claremont Graduate School and a
law degree at George Washington University, joined ARCO in 1980. During his
17-year ARCO career, he has held positions in ARCO Solar, ARCO Chemical Company
and the Corporate staff. Prior to joining Investor Relations in 1996, he was
Vice President of Finance, Planning and Control for ARCO International Oil and
Gas Company.
