LONDON (AFX) - SSL International PLC said that the new year has begun
satisfactorily and it is optimistic that the challenges ahead -- completing the
major disposals and improving the profitability of its consumer business -- can
be met successfully.
At the same time, the maker of Durex condoms and Scholl foot products
reported that sales rose by 5 pct to 623.9 mln stg, compared with 592.4 mln stg
last year in the year to March 31 -- above its own guidance that sales would
attain 622 mln stg.
Pretax profit totalled 39.1 mln stg, up from a loss of 2.9 mln stg,
including an exceptional cost of 20 mln stg.
SSL said that following a review of the group's operations, it is focusing
resources on its consumer healthcare businesses -- which include the Durex and
Scholl brands -- and by divesting the medical business, as well as the
industrial gloves business.
The group said the process of selling the medical business is now well
underway and has generated a substantial level of interest.

SSL was leading the risers after an unexpected and upbeat trading statement,
with shares ahead 19 pence to 220.

The condoms to corn plasters group said full year sales should come slightly
ahead of previous guidance, helped up by better-than-expected performance at its consumer sales unit.

SSL also said the disposal of its medical business is now well under way
with further details scheduled for June. This boosted hopes the company is in talks with a potential buyer; Dresdner KW kept a 'buy' recommendation.

SSL is a major competitor,me thinks

LONDON (AFX) - SSL International PLC said it has launched Biogel Skinsense
PI, the next generation synthetic surgical glove from Regent Medical, its
surgical gloves division.
The new product will be available, initially in the US, from March 2003.
The glove is made from polyisoprene, which has fit, feel and comfort
characteristics comparable to latex gloves but without concerns about allergies
to natural rubber latex proteins.
It said it has been designed to help eliminate the disadvantages of
stiffness, lower elasticity and tendency to deform found in some other synthetic
gloves.
The new glove and the production process have been under test for six
months.

Good Morning Waldron,

Thought you were sticking to European Shares and especially with those you know.

Ozzies and Kiwis are great but perhaps theres a better share closer to home.

Surprised to see that an Australian maker of Medical Gloves has slipped its way in to the Advfn Arena.

Would be interesting to know whether any posters out there are familiar with this company called Ansells LD.
