ABB will power up the world's biggest financial district
2008-08-13 - ABB is designing a complete power supply solution for what will be the world's largest international financial center and one of India's biggest ever infrastructure projects - Gujarat International Finance Tec-City.

By ABB Communications

Occupying a greenfield site of more than 500 acres in the rapidly developing state of Gujarat, Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT) will be the world's largest international financial services center and IT hub when it is completed in 2017.

The site consists of about 100 million square feet of commercial and residential floor space, including an 80-storey signature building known as Diamond Tower. The center will dwarf comparable financial districts like London's Docklands, Shanghai's Pudong and Tokyo's Shinjuku.

GIFT is located midway between Gujarat's two most important cities, Ahmedabad (India's seventh largest city) and Gandhinagar, and will be linked to both by expressways and mass transit railway systems. The massive development is expected to provide employment for around 500,000 people, and homes for about 50,000.

In addition to advanced ICT (information and communications technologies) systems, GIFT will function as an environmentally friendly eco-city, incorporating renewable energy sources like solar power, energy-efficient intelligent buildings and district cooling.

ABB was selected by Fairwood India, the project management consultants for GIFT, to design a complete power distribution system for the entire city to international benchmark levels of grid reliability, power quality and energy efficiency.

ABB Second-Quarter Net Rises on Power Grid Investment (Update1)

By Antonio Ligi

July 24 (Bloomberg) -- ABB Ltd., the world's largest builder of electricity grids, said second-quarter profit rose 34 percent as nations from the U.S. to China invested in power networks.

Net income climbed to $975 million from $729 million a year earlier, the Zurich-based company said in a statement. Analysts in a Bloomberg survey estimated earnings of $982 million. Sales advanced 27 percent to $9.03 billion.

ABB this month named Joseph Hogan of General Electric Co. as chief executive officer to harness growing demand for ABB's substations and power-transmission gear. Electricity providers in North America and Europe are modernizing plants, and China aims to spend almost $150 billion over five years to bolster its network after six years of blackouts. Investment in energy helped GE's infrastructure unit beat its second-quarter profit target.

``Transmission and distribution is a super cycle, investments are being done everywhere, also in the U.S.,'' said Landsbanki Kepler analyst Christoph Ladner, who has a ``buy'' rating on the stock.

ABB lost 7.4 percent this year in Zurich trading, giving it a market value of 70 billion Swiss francs ($68 billion). Schneider Electric SA, a competitor in industrial automation and medium-voltage power products, is down 23 percent in Paris.

Cash Pool

ABB in May won an order to supply valves and control systems to a power line in central China. The Asian nation, which accounted for 12 percent of ABB's orders last year, had to boost electricity prices from July 1 to rein in energy consumption.

Last week, ABB strengthened its medium-voltage business in North America with the purchase of Kuhlman Electric Corp., a supplier of transformers. The company also makes equipment to automate factories, and demand for its robots from customers in the food, packaging and processing industries also bolstered earnings.

Like rivals, the company has sourced more components from low-cost countries to improve margins, with price increases to cover raw-material inflation.

Acquisitions

The Swiss company has accumulated about $5.6 billion in cash with both Hogan and his predecessor, Fred Kindle, declining to specify what plans they have for the money. Kindle unexpectedly quit five months ago after clashing with Chairman Hubertus von Gruenberg over strategy.

Hogan, the first American to lead ABB in its 20-year history, more than doubled sales as head of GE Healthcare to $17 billion. He also led the $10 billion acquisition of Amersham Plc, in 2004.

``Hogan gained extensive M&A experience as CEO of GE Healthcare,'' Ben Maurer, an analyst at Royal Bank of Scotland, said in a research note. ``Hogan will want some time to get to know ABB and any transformational deal within a few months of his arrival seems racy.'' RBS has an ``underweight'' rating on ABB, and is ``overweight'' on Schneider Electric.

The Swiss company, formed in 1988 through the merger of BBC Brown Boveri of Switzerland and ASEA AB of Sweden, last spent more than $1 billion on a takeover in 1998, when it bought Elsag Bailey Process Automation NV for $2.1 billion from Finmeccanica SpA.

ABB wins $28-million contract in Turkey
Power equipment to ensure reliable electricity supply for new steel plant

Zurich, Switzerland, July 11, 2008 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won a $28-million contract for equipment to provide a new steel plant in Turkey with the reliable power supply needed to ensure high-quality production.
The project is the largest single private investment in the iron and steel industry in Turkey and will have the capacity to produce 2.5 million tons of hot flat-rolled products and 1.2 million tons of cold rolled products. The plant will also produce galvanizing steel, dyed sheet steel and rolled steel.

ABB will supply technology including a Static Var Compensator (SVC), which compensates for fluctuations in the voltage and current of power supplies that can harm production quality in industrial plants. The contract was awarded by MMK-ATAKAS, a joint partnership between Atakas Metallurgy and Port Management Inc. (Turkey) and Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK), a Russian company.

"This is an excellent example of 'one-stop' shopping," said Peter Leupp, head of ABB's Power Systems division. "The technical support provided by ABB experts in the initial phase proved extremely worthwhile for the customer and we collaborated closely on the development of a tailored solution."

The order includes transformers, high- and medium-voltage switchgear, a substation SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) system, and FACTS (flexible AC transmission system). In addition to the SVC system, ABB will supply four power transformers, a 380/34.5-kilovolt (kV) complete turnkey switchyard, and a 72.5-kV open switchyard. The company will also supply and install medium-voltage panels along with the SCADA and communications system.

The initial phase of the project is scheduled to be operational by April 1, 2009. Backed by more than 30 years of experience in SVC systems for the steel industry, ABB solutions will shorten melting times and decrease energy loss, lowering energy costs and reducing consumption of materials.

ABB wins $70-million order for power link in northeastern China
Reliable power supply to help industrial development of Liaoning province

Zurich, Switzerland, June 18, 2008 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won a $70-million order for power equipment from State Grid Corporation of China for a new power link in northeastern China that will help the development of industry in the region.
The new HVDC (high-voltage, direct current) link will transmit 3,000 MW (megawatts) of power over 920 kilometers from Hulunbeir, in Inner Mongolia, to Shenyang in Liaoning province. The ABB order is part of a project with an estimated total value of $400 million.

"We are very pleased that State Grid Corporation has selected ABB for this portion of an important project to support the rejuvenation of Liaoning's industrial base," said Peter Leupp, head of ABB's Power Systems division. "ABB has unrivalled experience in high-voltage direct current, with projects on every continent, on land and at sea."

The new DC power transmission link will run in parallel to an existing alternating current (AC) link, creating a so-called hybrid transmission corridor with a higher capacity and greater reliability. The proportion of power lost as heat into the atmosphere will also decline as DC links have smaller losses than AC over long distances.

ABB will provide key components for the converter stations at each end of the link, to switch AC to DC and then back to AC again, as well as measuring equipment for the converter stations. The link is scheduled for commercial operation in December 2009.

Scurlock says ABB, a company which aims to make electricity grids more efficient and features in his portfolio, has become a major beneficiary of growing demand for electrical power in China. Electrical power shortages in the country have led to the rapid building of generation capacity, which has put pressure on the supply chain for power generation and transmission equipment, he says.
