The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department has launched an official investigation into Olympus Corp. (7733.TO) and has requested company documents, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported Thursday, after the firm admitted hiding losses for decades.
Olympus is being investigated under suspicion of breaching Japan's Financial Instruments and Exchange Law, the report said, after the firm said Tuesday that it spent decades covering up investment losses and had tried to clean up its books using four later acquisitions.
Japanese police will exchange information gathered during the investigation with overseas law enforcement agencies, such as the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, which is also pursuing an investigation into Olympus, the report said.
