Deutsche Post Says 13,800 Workers Strike in Germany Amid Wage Dispute

Deutsche Post AG said Friday that 13,800 employees across Germany responded to a call for a nationwide strike from German union Verdi as part of a wage dispute.

Verdi had called on employees in selected letter and parcel centers to join full-day strikes Friday to demand pay increases. Verdi said it is demanding a 15% wage increase for around 160,000 employees at Deutsche Post with a 12-month term and training allowances to increase by 200 euros per month each year of training.

Deutsche Post said in a statement the striking employees represent more than a third of its workforce present at the affected locations. The German logistics and postal group said it sees the strikes as excessive since the company already announced that it will present an offer in the next round of negotiations.

The next round of negotiations will take place on Feb. 8 and 9, Deutsche Post and the union said.

From Jan. 19 to Jan. 22, 30,000 Deutsche Post employees across Germany participated in full-day strikes, which resumed on Thursday with 6,000 employees striking, Verdi said.
