Daimler, Bosch Get OK For Driverless Valet Pilot Project in Germany

Daimler AG (DAI.XE) and Robert Bosch GmbH have received a special permit from German authorities for a driverless parking system that doesn't require human supervision, the car maker said Tuesday.

The maker of Mercedes-Benz cars said the fully automated driverless parking function will collect and return vehicles independently at its museum's parking garage in Stuttgart, where the company is headquartered.

Auto-parts supplier Bosch is supplying the infrastructure for the pilot project, while Daimler is contributing the vehicle technology, it said. "As a pioneer in automated driving, our project paves the way for automated valet parking to go into mass production in the future," Michael Hafner, Daimler's head of automated driving, said.

Owners of a Daimler car which offers the function can use their smartphone to operate the automated valet parking. "Once the driver has left the parking garage to go about their business, the car drives itself to an assigned space and parks. Later, the car returns to the drop-off point in exactly the same way," the company said.
