Canadian Tire Corp. broadened a recall of Christmas lights sold across Canada after the country's health agency said the lights posed the risk of fire or electric shock.

Toronto-based Canadian Tire, one of Canada's largest home-improvement retailers, said it was recalling another 33 types of indoor and outdoor Christmas lights, just two weeks after it recalled 12 types of Christmas lights. The lights were sold under the "Holiday Collection" brand name and were manufactured in China.

Canadian Tire isn't the only Canadian retailer affected by the seasonal lighting recall this year. Health Canada last Friday expanded an earlier recall to 1.3 million products sold by a number of retailers, warning the lights could overheat or cause fire or electric shock. It said the lights were sold by Canadian Tire, Lowe's Cos.' Canadian unit, Dollarama Inc. and several other retailers. The agency said last Friday it had received 19 reports of incidents related to the recall, including shock and minor burns.

No serious injuries have been reported.

The recall notices said the lights were manufactured by Zhejiang Kaifu Lamp Co., Taizhou Hongpeng Colour Lanterns Co. and Ningbo EGO International Co.

"We take tremendous pride in sourcing quality products for Canadians and we've been let down by two factories that have manufactured products that do not meet our safety standards. We will obviously address these failures with the factories, but in the meantime we're asking Canadians to return the identified products," Canadian Tire's chief operating officer, Allan MacDonald, said in a news release late Tuesday.
