Transition from Wackenhut security force to be complete by mid-2008 WARRENVILLE, Ill., Dec. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Exelon Nuclear announced today that it will replace Wackenhut Nuclear Services with an in-house security force at its 10 operating nuclear energy stations by July 2008. Exelon Nuclear's in-house security force will manage all aspects of security at its sites in Illinois, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Wackenhut officials were informed of the decision on Dec. 3 and pledged full cooperation to ensure a smooth transition. The company in the past has evaluated establishing an internal security operation and performed a comprehensive assessment of Wackenhut's security operations again this fall, concluding that future security requirements could best be met by bringing security management and operations in-house. The latest assessment found no significant deficiencies beyond those identified at the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station in Delta, Pa., this fall. In November, Exelon ended its contract with Wackenhut to provide security services at Peach Bottom. Other nuclear stations will begin transitioning to the new internal organization, to be known as Exelon Nuclear Security LLC, in February 2008. "Based on our assessment, we have decided to directly manage our own security force to ensure the highest standards of excellence," Exelon Chief Nuclear Officer Charles Pardee said. "We view this as a positive development for our company and the new employees of Exelon Nuclear Security." Exelon remains committed to the safety of its communities and excellence in operations, including security operations, Pardee said. There will be no reduction in security capabilities during the transition, he said. Nuclear plant security officers are highly trained personnel with specialized skills. Many security officers currently protecting Exelon's nuclear stations have backgrounds in the military and law enforcement. Exelon Corporation is one of the nation's largest electric utilities with more than $15 billion in annual revenues. The company has one of the industry's largest portfolios of electricity generation capacity, with a nationwide reach and strong positions in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic. Exelon distributes electricity to approximately 5.4 million customers in northern Illinois and Pennsylvania and natural gas to approximately 480,000 customers in the Philadelphia area. Exelon is headquartered in Chicago and trades on the NYSE under the ticker EXC.
