United Parcel Service Inc. (UPS) appointed Alan Gershenhorn as its first chief commercial officer, part of several management changes as the U.S. shipping giant aims to improve its performance.
The move comes nearly a week after the UPS named Chief Operating Officer David Abney as the successor of Chief Executive Scott Davis, starting in September. Mr. Abney and his team will need to steer UPS through the explosion of e-commerce business and improve a U.S. operation that struggled to keep pace with Christmas shipments last year.
Mr. Gershenhorn has been "instrumental in defining and driving our strategic priorities of health-care logistics, global business to consumer services, and emerging markets capabilities, Mr. Davis said in a statement.
These will remain priorities among many other growth platforms that will redefine UPS over the next decade," Mr. Davis said.
Mr. Gershenhorn, 55 years old, is credited with leading other transformation efforts at the company. He began his UPS career in 1979 as a part-time package handler, according to the company.
