Contribution supports distribution of 3,000 backpacks in the Charlotte area, and 100,000 backpacks across the U.S., for children in need as they head back to school

Domtar Corporation (NYSE: UFS) (SX: UFS) today announced that it has donated $100,000 to the Office Depot Foundation’s National Backpack Program. Domtar’s donation will help provide children in the Charlotte area—and across the country—with the supplies they need as the new school year begins. Of the 100,000 backpacks that will be distributed nationwide, 3,000 will be distributed to nonprofit organizations and schools in the Charlotte area.

3,000 of the colorful sackpacks containing essential school supplies are being donated to nonprofit organizations, schools and agencies in the Charlotte area during a special Back-to-School Celebration at 3:00 p.m. (ET) today, Thursday, August 17, at Classroom Central, located at 2116 Wilkinson Blvd. in Charlotte. The nonprofit organizations, schools and agencies scheduled to receive sackpacks in the Charlotte area on August 17 include:

  • A Child’s Place
  • City of Charlotte Department of Neighborhood & Business Services
  • Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Activities League
  • Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools
  • Classroom Central
  • Trips for Kids
  • YMCA of Greater Charlotte

Domtar Director of Sales and Office Supply, Gregory Strand, and Senior Director of Corporate Communications, Kathy Wholley, will participate in the backpack presentation, along with other special guests such as, Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Charlotte’s Mayor Pro Tem Vi Lyles, and other local government officials.

“Each year, Domtar’s generous donation makes a tremendous difference in the lives of thousands of children here in the Charlotte area, and nationwide,” said Mary Wong, president of the Office Depot Foundation. “Domtar’s ongoing support helps give children in need the essential tools for success at the start of the school year.”

Classroom Central has been a partner in the Office Depot Foundation National Backpack Program for the past several years. Domtar has partnered with Classroom Central for more than a decade to provide free school supplies to educators working in high-poverty schools.

“Domtar is committed to investing in our local communities,” said Domtar Director of Sales and Office Supply, Gregory Strand. “Our longtime partnership with both the Office Depot Foundation and Classroom Central reflects one of our core pillars of giving: to promote literacy by empowering children with the reading and writing tools they need to learn and succeed.”

2017 marks the 17th year of the award-winning National Backpack Program. By the end of this year, more than 4 million backpacks and sackpacks will have been given away to nonprofit organizations, schools and agencies across the United States.
