LOS ANGELES, March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Everything Channel, a UBM company, and L.A. Works, a nonprofit, volunteer action center, are partnering to empower students at Dayton Heights Elementary School by providing much needed technology for its library, computer lab and teacher's workroom. The new technology in the library was unveiled to students at a ribbon-cutting ceremony with local and school officials this morning. (Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20100308/NY66649) Channel@Work: Technology Makeover School Edition program, a nonprofit component of Everything Channel's XChange Solution Provider conference, brought together 50 members of the technology community and Everything Channel employees for a community service project. Volunteers installed six new computers and a printer in the school's library, one new computer in the teacher's workroom, refreshed the operating systems on 34 mac workstations in the computer lab and installed new keyboards. Additionally, program volunteers beautified several areas of the school including painting a mural created by Los Angeles-based artist, Jennifer Langstrom. "On behalf of the City of Los Angeles, I would like to thank Everything Channel and its sponsors for investing in technology that will provide our students with the tools and resources that will enhance their educational experience," said Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. "Through access to computers in the classroom, the students of Dayton Heights Elementary will be able to gain the technical skills necessary to compete in the global economy." Nancy Hammervik, Senior Vice President, Events, Everything Channel, Debra Brutchey, Senior Director, L.A. Works, Marie Leyva, Principal, Dayton Heights Elementary, Eric Martorano, Director of U.S. Partner Channel, Microsoft, Melissa Infusino, Director of Partnerships, Los Angeles Unified School District and Eric Garcetti, Los Angeles City Council President, District 13 were in attendance to cut the ribbon on the library. Technology and service donations to Dayton Heights Elementary School include: -- Microsoft is the underwriter of the Channel@Work: Technology Makeover School Edition program. -- AMD donated seven all-in-one workstation computers built on the most recent AMD platform. -- Solution provider, Jessica DeVita of UberGeekGirl ® of Santa Monica, CA refreshed the operating systems on the mac workstations in the computer lab and installed new keyboards. -- Solution provider Bob Nitrio of Ranvest Associates, Orangevale, CA installed six new workstations and a networked color laser printer in the library and one new workstation in the teacher's workroom. -- Juniper Networks made a monetary donation. -- Samsung donated a CLP-670ND printer as well as two 22 inch 2243BWT-1 monitors and two SPL300 LCD projectors for audio visual needs at the school. -- Belkin International, Inc. made technology donations. -- Through its integration partner, Arey Jones Educational Solutions, the Los Angeles Unified School District's Information Technology Division will incorporate and manage these new workstations and the refreshed computer lab systems, which include new keyboards supplied by the district. "We are very excited to bring the attendees and sponsors of XChange Solution Provider as well as members of the Everything Channel team together to assist the Dayton Heights Elementary School. It is a privilege for us to give back to the local community and showcase our commitment to education. We are thrilled to leave a lasting tribute with the city of Los Angeles," said Hammervik. Opened in 1909, Dayton Heights Elementary is currently in its 100th school year. Designated a Title 1 school, as 91 percent of students' families have household incomes below poverty level and qualify for free lunches, the school administrators work hard to serve the 588 students in grades K-5. The focus for the year is to raise the Academic Performance Index (API) from 757 to above the state target of 800. Understanding that technology is an important tool to increase student performance, the principal is pleased to have the Channel@Work: Technology Makeover School Edition program on her campus. "We are very grateful for the business community's generosity in helping us revitalize the library and computer lab at Dayton Heights Elementary School," said Brutchey. "Everything Channel and members of the technology industry have set aside valuable time to help us improve the facility of one of our community partners. We appreciate this tremendous support of our mission to increase volunteer participation and build the capacity of our nonprofit partners." "Our children are growing up in a world where technology is part of everything we do, so it's crucial for them to have access to the tools that will help them succeed," said Martorano. "Microsoft, along with our partners, is excited to provide these exciting state-of-the-art technology solutions to the students of Dayton Heights Elementary School to help fuel their learning now and for years to come." Everything Channel's Channel@Work initiative is the nonprofit component of all XChange events. Channel@Work brings together members of the technology industry to support local communities in need. The Channel@Work: Technology Makeover School Edition program is the nonprofit component of its XChange Solution Provider event which will take place March 8-11, 2010 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles. XChange Solution Provider will bring together more than 200 pre-qualified executive-level technology sellers with approximately 75 industry leading Channel vendors to meet, build relationships and strategize growth.
