"Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" opened to $166.1 million in the U.S. and Canada, slightly less than Warner Bros. estimated Sunday morning.
The downward revision in the opening-weekend numbers from the Time Warner Inc.-owned studio lowered the film's standing in the list of domestic movie openings. "Batman v Superman" now ranks as the seventh-biggest domestic opening of all time just behind Warner's own "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2." Based on the initial estimate of $170.1 million, it would have displaced the Harry Potter film at No. 6.
Including an international gross of $256.5 million, the superhero Battle Royal opened to $422.6 million globally, the fourth-biggest worldwide opening in box office history.
By Tuesday, "Batman v Superman" surpassed $500 million globally, reaching total ticket sales of $501.9 million, Warner said.
