Sybase Announces Latest Version of Award-Winning Mobile and
Wireless Rapid Application Development Tool
Developers Can Deliver Mobile Applications in Hours With Sybase PocketBuilder
2.0
SAN FRANCISCO, POCKETPC SUMMIT 2004, Oct. 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sybase,
Inc. (NYSE:SY), a leading provider of enterprise infrastructure and wireless
software, today announced the upcoming availability of Sybase PocketBuilder
2.0, the latest version of the only true rapid application development (RAD)
tool for mobile and wireless applications. New features in this release
include native support for global positioning systems (GPS), barcode scanners,
Smart Phone platforms, cameras and PocketPC phones. PocketBuilder has been
hailed by the industry, including first place in the developer tool category
for MobileVillage's 2004 "Mobile Star" awards, and the Productivity Award in
the 14th Annual Software Development "Jolt Product Excellence Awards" mobile
development tools category.
"Sybase's award-winning PocketBuilder is still the only true RAD tool for
mobile development, and continues to empower enterprises to build and deliver
data-driven mobile applications in just hours," said David Tong, vice president
of engineering, Sybase Information Technology & Solutions Group. "The latest
enhancements to the product add to the hundreds of functions and ready-to-use
components that enable developers to deliver robust applications with only a
few lines of code."
Key Sybase PocketBuilder 2.0 features and benefits include:
-- Integrated Development Environment (IDE) -- Easy to use IDE with
built-in object oriented language allows development of applications in
hours. Hundreds of built-in functions, many ready-to-use components,
and drag and drop RAD programming further reduce development time.
-- Patented DataWindow(R) technology -- Unparalleled data access,
processing and presentation specifically targeted for mobile
devices -- all without coding.
-- Simplified MobiLink Synchronization -- Locally stored data minimizes
battery draining connection time, but still allows up-to-the-minute
data for mobile users. Wizards simplify synchronization, and tight
integration with Sybase subsidiary iAnywhere Solutions' market-leading
mobile database SQL Anywhere(R) Studio ensures reliability and rich
enterprise-level functionality for developers and end users.
-- Additional Mobile Application Support -- Native support for global
positioning services (GPS), barcode scanners, Smart Phone platforms,
cameras PocketPC phones. PocketBuilder 2.0 also provides support for
phone short message service (SMS), where the user can quickly and
easily add a new dimension of communication and flexibility from the
providers' applications, specifically track calls with the call log and
access and modify contact information with phone directory support.
"Sybase PocketBuilder 2.0 has made the creation and extension of mobile
applications a fast and painless process," said Andres Rubiano, director of
Cardiology Informatics, Ochsner Clinic Foundation. "By mobilizing patient
records, our doctors are able to pull up information on mobile devices wherever
they are, improving the accuracy of their decisions and the quality of patient
care. The technology is easy to use, and requires very little programming --
allowing our team to focus on service delivery rather than IT processes."
"By bringing the benefits of 4GL programming to the mobile world, Sybase
PocketBuilder can significantly decrease the time and costs associated with
application development," said Steve McClure, a program vice president in IDC's
Software Research Group. "Any developer, whether they have used Sybase before
or not, should be immediately productive with this easy-to-use tool."
The Sybase Developer Network (SDN) offers in-depth support to help developers
get the most from PocketBuilder and other Sybase tools through free trial
software, technical information, and collaboration with other Sybase
