New Design Tool from Sybase Aligns Information Technology to Business Needs with
Enterprise Modeling
Sybase PowerDesigner 10.0 Incorporates Business- and Technology-Centric Modeling
to Increase Project Success and Reduce Costs
DUBLIN, Calif., Feb. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sybase, Inc. , a leading
provider of enterprise infrastructure and mobile software, today announced the
availability of Sybase PowerDesigner 10.0, an enterprise modeling tool that
integrates both business- and technology-centric industry standard techniques.
This unique modeling approach fosters greater communication and collaboration
between the business and technical communities, regardless of the end user's
skill level. Already well known for its data, UML and business-process modeling
capabilities, this new version of PowerDesigner offers new features to help
enterprises face the challenge of more closely aligning IT to their business
needs, a key element in increasing project success, while reducing operational
costs.
"One of the more pressing challenges today is to understand the relationship
between organizational needs, the functionality of existing IT systems, and new
IT system development," said Stephen D. Hendrick from IDC. "A unified approach
to business process and data modeling provides the best approach to align
business needs with existing and planned systems. Modeling is likely to be the
best approach to drive the development of applications that rely on a high
degree of application infrastructure and adhere to a service oriented
architecture," adds Mr. Hendrick.
With PowerDesigner 10.0, business users have an even greater ability to optimize
business processes. A new interface to SIMUL8's simulation tool allows business
users to adjust processes to maximize efficiencies and minimize operational
costs. In addition, business models tie more closely to implementation through
the addition of BPEL4WS (Business Process Execution Language for Web Services)
round-trip engineering support. Developers with heterogeneous development
environments, or those using C# or Visual Basic .Net, can take advantage of the
productivity-boosting value of PowerDesigner 10.0's practical approach to UML.
Extending Java, Corba IDL, PowerBuilder(R) and XML features with support for the
most popular languages of the Microsoft .Net platform ensures any enterprise
that the language, or languages used to develop software services, components
and applications are represented.
"While the focus of modeling tools was once almost exclusively data modeling,
business process modeling and UML have become necessities in the software
development industry," said Peter Singer, vice-president of product development
for Knorr Associates Inc. "There are many tools on the market today that
provide data modeling, including data-warehouse modeling, object modeling,
business process modeling and UML modeling, but there are none that accomplish
all of these to the degree that Sybase PowerDesigner does."
Sybase PowerDesigner also offers support for fast growing technologies such as
MDA (Model Driven Architecture). While other modeling tools offer limited UML
support for MDA, support for MDA in PowerDesigner 10.0 has been applied to the
entire tool. This enables both Data Modelers and Business Process Modelers to
customize MDA to meet their specific methodologies and standards, thus avoiding
significant, perhaps redundant manual rework of generated code. The
customizable implementation of MDA in PowerDesigner 10.0 allows users to fully
benefit from MDA's promise to offer more automatic code generation for leading
platforms such as Web Services, Java and .Net.
"Consistency among modeling tools is essential when an enterprise wants to align
business and IT needs," said Dimitri Volkmann, worldwide product line director,
Sybase Enterprise Products and Technologies, Tools. "With Sybase PowerDesigner
10.0, we set out to develop a fully-integrated tool that incorporates each of
the three modeling techniques -- business processmodeling, data modeling and
UML -- making it easier for business and IT departments to collaborate on
projects, resulting in more consistent and affordable project outcomes."
PowerDesigner 10.0 is available now, with prices starting as low as $995. For
