CellStar Selects Sybase mFolio Content Services Solution to
Bolster Existing Communication Products
SYNOPSIS: Sybase announces a strategic OEM agreement with CellStar to include
mFolio Content Services Solution as part of CellStar's existing wireless
communications portfolio of products and services.
NEW ORLEANS, CTIA WIRELESS 2005, March 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sybase,
Inc. (NYSE:SY), a leading provider of enterprise infrastructure and mobile
software, today announced that it has entered into a strategic partner
agreement with CellStar, a leading logistics and distribution company, to
incorporate Sybase's mFolio(TM) Content Services Solution into CellStar's
existing wireless communications portfolio of products and services. The deal
enables CellStar to seamlessly provide the mFolio Content Services Solution to
wireless carriers via a wide range of smart phones, including devices with
Intel Corporation's XScale Technology.
"With the rapid advances in technology, wireless users have an ever- increasing
number of applications and Web accessibility options available to them on their
handhelds," said Maria Hernandez, vice president of Product Development,
CellStar. "By leveraging Sybase's mFolio, we can offer wireless carriers
complete, out-of-the-box solutions to easily access rich online content on
their mobile devices, at a fraction of the price of competitive offerings."
The new offering, CellStar(R) mFolio Powered by Sybase, is a standalone mobile
software application that enables the delivery of highly focused,
device-optimized Internet content to wireless subscribers, helping to overcome
the barriers to mobile Internet adoption.
CellStar will deploy the mFolio solution on devices for carriers, and will have
rights to embed and sell mFolio to regional carriers and MVNOs in the North
American market. CellStar will provide logistics and distribution services
such as programming devices with the application, assisting carriers with set
up and operation of the content services and ongoing support to ensure
successful acceptance of the new data service by the carrier's subscribers.
For carriers, mFolio will provide optimized content delivery for small screens,
always available content, improved subscriber Web experience, ease of
deployment and minimal infrastructure requirements or costs -- resulting in
increased subscriber adoption with low deployment costs for a new data service.
For carriers' subscribers, mFolio provides the easiest path to personalized and
interesting content, including local up-to-date traffic, weather, news and
sports. It also provides content focus and automatic display optimization,
reducing content noise and saving time, bandwidth and screen real estate.
mFolio allows subscribers to access both up-to-the-minute content on a live
network, and the most recent copy once they leave the network, all with minimal
power to save battery life.
mFolio is designed to take advantage of the increasing computational power of
today's convergent devices, such as smartphones and PDAs, and helps carriers to
offer any viewpoint of regular Web content on the handset easily, without
additional coding.
"New converged handsets will offer the ability to transform the way we work,"
said John Davies, vice president and general manager, Intel Solutions Group,
Intel. "Intel XScale Technology handsets deliver advanced integration and
leading multimedia performance. This new data service from CellStar and Sybase
will allow information to be presented when it's needed."
"We are excited at the momentum mFolio is experiencing and pleased to be
working with a global leader like CellStar to bring this data services solution
to carriers," said Billy Ho, senior vice president of the OEM/Telecom group at
Sybase. "This partnership further reinforces the development and growth
potential for new Sybase(R) business in the telecommunications arena."
CellStar mFolio powered by Sybase will be available to carriers today to begin
evaluation. Sybase and CellStar are also showcasing the mFolio solutions at
