Constellation Brands Recalls Some Corona Beer Packs in U.S., Guam

Constellation Brands Inc. on Wednesday issued a recall in the U.S. and Guam for 12-packs and 18-packs Corona Extra beer because the bottles may contain small particles of glass.

The Corona brewer said the recall was limited in scope. It estimates that one in every 5,000 bottles is affected and most 12-packs aren't affected.

The glass bottles were made by a third-party supplier and filled at Mexican breweries owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev NV, which has a contract to supply Constellation with Corona through mid-2017.

AB InBev said that the recall doesn't affect any Corona sold outside the U.S. or Guam.

In a statement, Paul Hetterich, president, Constellation Brands Beer Division, said, "We're actively working with our distributor partners and retailers to quickly resolve the matter."

Constellation ran into a similar issue in 2014 when it had to recall Corona packages because of concern that bottles contained glass particles. No injuries were reported following that recall. However calling back the product cost the company an estimated $37 million. It also led the company to buy the glass manufacturing plant at its brewery in Nava, Mexico, in an effort to avoid future disruptions.
