The following table lists unplanned and planned production outages at U.S. refineries as reported by Dow Jones Newswires. The information is compiled from both official and unofficial refining sources and doesn't purport to be a comprehensive list.
The maintainenance refinery turnaround at Valero's 150,000 barrel-a-day refinery in Wilmington, Calif., is finally coming to a close and a substantial number of units are coming back on line over the next several days, according to Valero spokesman Bill Day. The maintenance on the refinery was in effect for almost six weeks.
A process upset at the Sunoco owned and operated 135,000 barrel-a-day refinery in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, resulted in the take down of a hydrotreater at the 135,000 barrel-a-day refinery on Feb. 9.accoording to a refinery spokesperson. The source of the problem was was in pipes leading to the hydrotreater and the unit was expected to be out of service for two weeks. The refinery is running at reduced rates, but the company indicates it will be able to meet product demand.
A flaring event, resulting in the release of sulfur dioxide, took place at the Delaware City Refining Company on Feb. 12 at 6:15 AM, according to the Delaware Department of Natural Rewources and Environmental Control. Firm indications that a coker and related boiler were down.
An emissions event took place from Feb. 11 to Feb. 12 at the Borger Refinery in Texas, according to the Texas Commission On Environmental Quality. It wasn't known which unit, or unit's, were upset, but no product shortages were evident.
North Atlantic Refining on Feb. 9 said a brief fire the day before at its oil refinery in Come By Chance, Newfoundland, Canada, caused the shutdown of a platformer unit. The damages appear to be minor, and the unit is expected to be offline for only a few days. All other major processing units remain in operation," a company representative said.
CVR Energy (CVI) said on Feb. 9 the final phase of previously announced turnaround maintenance at its oil refinery in Coffeyville, Kansas, will get under way on Feb. 28. Crude unit No. 2, a coker unit, vacuum unit No. 2 and a hydrotreater will be shut for about four to five weeks for inspection and repairs.
Suncor Energy Inc. (SU, SU.T) on Feb. 9 said an unspecified unit shut down at its 135,000-barrel-a-day refinery in Edmonton, Canada, after it experienced a process upset. The shutdown isn't expected to affect the company's ability to meet customer demand. The rest of the Edmonton refinery is running as normal.
Husky Energy (HSE) on Feb. 9 said construction is under way at its Lima, Ohio, refinery to build a new 20,000-barrel-a-day kerosene hydrotreater. It will come on line in the first half of 2013. Also 15 days of maintenance is planned to replace the catalyst at a diesel hydrotreater and 29 days of turnaround maintenance is set at the plant's aromatics unit in the fourth quarter of 2012. The Toledo, Ohio, refinery will under go minor turnaround maintenance in mid-2012.
Husky Energy's Lloydminster heavy oil upgrader in Saskatchewan, Canada, is scheduled for approximately three weeks of maintenance in the first half of 2012 to facilitate hydrogen plant repairs and catalyst change out. The next major turnaround is scheduled to commence in the fall of 2013.
Husky's Lloydminster Refinery will under go major turnaround in the spring of 2013. The plant is expected to be shutdown for 21 days during the turnaround for inspections and equipment repair.
Valero Energy Corp. (VLO) on Feb. 9 said the crude and coker units at its St. Charles refinery in Norco, La., were in the process of shutting down for previously announced 10-weeks of turnaround maintenance.
Marathon Petroleum Corp. (MPC) on Feb. 8 said hydrocracker unit 215 at its oil refinery in Garyville, La., had returned to service after an unplanned shutdown on Jan. 31. The company didn't specify when the unit came back on line.
North Atlantic Refining on Feb. 8 said a brief fire at its oil refinery in Come By Chance, Newfoundland, Canada, will have minimal impact to operations. The fire was contained and put out very quickly. No further details were provided.
The Feb. 7 power interruption at Motiva's Port Arthur, Texas, refinery slowed some process unit operations and shut others. A filing to regulators made public on Feb. 8 said an FCCU, Alkylation Unit and Hydrocracker were affected by the outage.
A planned flaring event from Feb. 5 through Feb. 9 is taking place at Valero's (VLO) 150,000 barrel-a-day refinery in Wilmington, Calif., a filing to regulators said. The refinery is shut for planned maintenance.
