The following table lists unplanned and planned production outages at U.S. refineries as reported by Dow Jones Newswires. The information is compiled from both official and unofficial refining sources and doesn't purport to be a comprehensive list.
BP PLC (BP, BP.LN) said Feb. 18 it has idled operations at its Cherry Point refinery in Ferndale, Wash. as the company determines the condition of a crude unit that caught fire the previous day.
Hess (HES) said Feb. 18 that it was in the process of restarting the FCC at its 70,000 barrel-a-day refinery in Port Reading, NJ, after completing repairs on the unit. The unit had been shut down on Feb. 3.
ConocoPhillips (COP) reported a plant upset Feb. 17 at its 240,000 barrel-a-day refinery in Westlake, La., according to a government filing. A company spokesman declined comment.
A platformer/reformer at North Atlantic Refining's 115,000 barrel-a-day refinery in Come By Chance, Newfoundland, Canada, has been returned to service after coming off line on Feb. 8, due to a brief fire, according to company spokeswoman Gloria Slade.
Tesoro's 58,000 barrel-a-day refinery in Salt Lake City, Utah, experienced a small fire early Feb. 17, resulting in the shut down of a crude unit, according to company spokeswoman Tina Bar- bee. There were no injuries, but it wasn't know when the crude unit what be brought back on line.
Alon USA's problem ridden 67,000 barrel-a-day refinery in Big Spring, Texas, suffered another cooling tower leak on Feb. 14, resulting in the shutdown of the aromex unit until further notice, according to the Texas Commission On Environmental Quality.
ConocoPhillips (COP) is planning maintenance at it's 120,000 barrel-a-day refinery in Rodeo, Calif., according to the California Hazardous Materials Spill Report. The shutdown of the hydrogen unit was effective Feb. 16, and will last for approximately five weeks, according to local regulators.
A fluid catalytic cracker at Motiva's 325,000 barrel-a-day refinery in Port Arthur, Texas, was restarted on Feb. 16 and should be in full production within seven days, according to a filing to the Texas State environmental regulators. The unit experienced a power disruption on Feb. 8.
A key gasoline producing unit was taken off line on a planned basis at ExxonMobil's 345,000 barrel-a-day refinery in Beaumont, Texas, on Feb. 15, according to company spokeswoman Kathleen Jackson. Some impact to production will be evident, Jackson said.
Extensive planned maintenance on a crude unit, fluid catalytic cracker, and reformer still continues at Tesoro's 165,000 barrel-a-day refinery in the San Francico Bay Area after 45 days of work. Traders and marketers familiar with the facility believe work will be completed in short order, but Tesoro wouldn't comment.
A process upset at the Sunoco owned and operated 135,000 barrel-a-day refinery in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, resulted in the take down of a hydrotreater at the 135,000 barrel-a-day refinery on Feb. 9.accoording to a refinery spokesperson. The source of the problem was was in pipes leading to the hydrotreater and the unit was expected to be out of service for two weeks. The refinery is running at reduced rates, but the company indicates it will be able to meet product demand.
A flaring event, resulting in the release of sulfur dioxide, took place at the Delaware City Refining Company on Feb. 12 at 6:15 AM, according to the Delaware Department of Natural Rewources and Environmental Control. Firm indications that a coker and related boiler were down.
CVR Energy (CVI) said on Feb. 9 the final phase of previously announced turnaround maintenance at its oil refinery in Coffeyville, Kansas, will get under way on Feb. 28. Crude unit No. 2, a coker unit, vacuum unit No. 2 and a hydrotreater will be shut for about four to five weeks for inspection and repairs.
Husky Energy (HSE) on Feb. 9 said construction is under way at its Lima, Ohio, refinery to build a new 20,000-barrel-a-day kerosene hydrotreater. It will come on line in the first half of 2013. Also 15 days of maintenance is planned to replace the catalyst at a diesel hydrotreater and 29 days of turnaround maintenance is set at the plant's aromatics unit in the fourth quarter of 2012. The Toledo, Ohio, refinery will under go minor turnaround maintenance in mid-2012.
Husky Energy's Lloydminster heavy oil upgrader in Saskatchewan, Canada, is scheduled for approximately three weeks of maintenance in the first half of 2012 to facilitate hydrogen plant repairs and catalyst change out. The next major turnaround is scheduled to commence in the fall of 2013.
Husky's Lloydminster Refinery will under go major turnaround in the spring of 2013. The plant is expected to be shutdown for 21 days during the turnaround for inspections and equipment repair.
Valero Energy Corp. (VLO) on Feb. 9 said the crude and coker units at its St. Charles refinery in Norco, La., were in the process of shutting down for previously announced 10-weeks of turnaround maintenance.
A planned flaring event from Feb. 5 through Feb. 9 is taking place at Valero's (VLO) 150,000 barrel-a-day refinery in Wilmington, Calif., a filing to regulators said. The refinery is shut for planned maintenance.
