International stocks trading in New York closed mixed on Friday, with the Bank of New York index of American depositary receipts falling 0.4% to 150.87. The European index dropped 0.5% to 150.75, the Asian index declined 0.6% to 142.30, the Latin American index rose 0.7% to 283.20 and the emerging markets index dropped 0.1% to 274.58. Among the companies with shares that actively traded was Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC (RBS, RBS.LN).

RBS has appointed Ewen Stevenson, a Credit Suisse AG investment banker, as its chief financial officer. Mr. Stevenson will join the RBS board on May 19, the bank said in a statement. Shares slid 0.8% to $10.45.

China Petroleum & Chemical Corp. (SNP, 0386.HK, 60028.SH), China's largest oil refiner, is looking to list its retail unit after completing a private sale of some of the business, said people familiar with the matter, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. Sinopec shares were essentially flat at $89.49.

GlaxoSmithKline PLC (GSK, GSK.LN) is cutting employees in China, said a person familiar with the matter, as the U.K. drug company grapples with Beijing's accusations that it bribed doctors and officials to help sales, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. Shares fell 1.1% to $52.14.
