NEW ORLEANS, June 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Siemens Healthcare (http://www.siemens.com/healthcare) honors the early adapters of its innovative high-definition positron emission tomography (HD-PET) technology at the 2008 Society of Nuclear Medicine (SNM) Scientific Sessions in New Orleans, June 14-18. The Siemens booth (#731) will feature experiences from early adopters as testament to the power of this new technology, and highlighting how HD-PET is enabling improved patient care all over the world. (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20070904/SIEMENSLOGO ) Siemens' HD-PET is the world's first and only high-definition PET technology to offer consistently sharper and clearly defined images across the entire field of view. The clarity achieved by HD-PET is the result of a unique and proprietary technology that optimizes the elements of image uniformity, resolution and contrast -- that together change the whole picture. "HD-PET is a real technological advancement for challenging imaging situations, in particular, for small lesions and breath-dependent lesions," said Professor Dr. W. Mohnike, of the Diagnostic Therapy Center in Berlin. Historically with PET imaging, intrinsic image quality has been known to degrade with increasing distance from the center of the detector, but with HD-PET, there is uniform resolution across the entire field of view. The improved resolution enables physicians to clearly visualize small lesions from the center to the edges of the field of view. Professor Mike Fulham of Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, Australia, agrees. "Our HD-PET studies are a major improvement in study quality; they are clearer, provide better delineation and detection of small foci of disease; they offer improved confidence in diagnosis and diagnostic accuracy, which improves patient care," he said. HD-PET could potentially improve diagnosis and staging of disease and, hence, clinical outcomes for patients. HD-PET, in combination with TrueV extended field of view, maximizes patient throughput and increases overall utilization. "Our Biograph 64 has enabled our hospital to image 49 patients in a single day, and our monthly record is 764 patients," said Xu Zhensheng, director of Shanghai Fudan University affiliated Huashan Hospital PET center in Shanghai, China, An entire section of the Siemens booth is dedicated to showcasing even more facilities using HD-PET and changing the management of their patients' care.
