The Shaw Group Inc. (NYSE: SGR) today announced its Energy & Chemicals Group has been selected by Sasol to provide basic engineering support for two Fischer-Tropsch units.

Shaw is providing the basic engineering package for the Fischer-Tropsch unit of Sasol’s Wax Expansion Project in Sasolburg, South Africa. Shaw's scope of work includes proprietary equipment design and technology optimization. The project is expected to increase Sasol’s production of medium waxes and liquid paraffins by approximately 50 percent.

In addition, Shaw is providing engineering services to Sasol Technology’s Fischer Tropsch Licensing group (FTL). The FTL is performing a feasibility study for the Sasol and Shenhua-Ningxia Coal Company partnership. The feasibility study examines the potential for an 80,000 barrels-per-day coal-to-liquids plant in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region of China. Specifically, Shaw is supporting the Fischer-Tropsch, water treatment, wax treatment and heavy ends recovery areas of the study with the FTL.

“Shaw has worked with Sasol on Fischer-Tropsch technology for more than 30 years and has designed approximately 96 percent of all Fischer-Tropsch units in the world,” said Lou Pucher, president of Shaw’s Energy & Chemicals Group. “The two contracts further solidify Shaw’s long-term partnership with Sasol in the continued development and expansion of this technology.”

The value of Shaw's contracts, which were included in the company's previously announced backlog of unfilled orders, was not disclosed.
