RR Donnelley and LIFE Magazine: Together Again
CHICAGO, Aug. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- R.R. Donnelley & Sons Company
(NYSE:RRD) has entered into a multi-year agreement with Time Inc., a business
unit of Time Warner Inc., and the largest magazine publisher in the world, to
print LIFE, its celebrated magazine of photojournalism. Inserted into 50
newspapers each Friday, this 12 million-copy magazine will have approximately
50% of its total circulation produced by RR Donnelley. When Time Inc.
originally launched LIFE magazine in 1936, RR Donnelley was selected as its
printer.
Commenting on being chosen for this new work, John Paloian, RR Donnelley's
Group President, Publishing & Retail Services, said, "We are extremely pleased
to have been selected to participate in the new launch of the respected LIFE
brand. Having worked together for more than 80 years, we appreciate the
confidence that Time Inc. continues to demonstrate in our ability to
successfully produce their magazines in an efficient and effective manner."
Barry Meinerth, Senior Vice President, Production and Fulfillment, Time Inc.,
added, "After careful consideration of the available marketplace options, we
are comfortable with our decision to select RR Donnelley as a printer for LIFE
magazine, which will be distributed weekly in newspapers across the country.
The strategic locations of their gravure manufacturing plants, combined with
their overall distribution expertise and their experience in serving
time-sensitive markets, were all key factors in our decision."
Susan Popler-Roy, LIFE's Director of Operations & Technology, said, "In RR
Donnelley, we are getting the benefit of significant technological and
operational expertise along with a thorough understanding of LIFE magazine's
strategic goals. RR Donnelley's longstanding history of working closely with
LIFE will serve us well as we undertake one of the most ambitious launches of a
weekly magazine."
Beginning this October, RR Donnelley will be responsible for producing the west
coast and southeast copies of LIFE at its Reno, Nev., and Spartanburg, S.C.,
plants.
Printing LIFE magazine represents a significant extension of Time Inc.'s
relationship with RR Donnelley. RR Donnelley currently prints Time, Sports
Illustrated and People magazines for Time Inc., as well as various specials,
direct mail, commercial print, forms, books and provides some logistics
services.
