Libya's western Mellitah port has resumed oil exports for an Eni SpA (E) joint-venture after protests ended there, a government oil official said Wednesday.

The news is a rare positive development for the country's oil production, much of which has shut down following a string of protests since the end of July.

The official with the state-owned National Oil Co. said a tanker was expected to leave later Wednesday with 600,000 barrels from the terminal, which exports oil from Eni's El Feel field.

The terminal had been shut by protesters demanding better rights for the Berber minority but, according to the official, other shut down onshore terminals have yet to reopen.

Libya's production has been cut to less than a third of its normal output of 1.6 million barrels a day due a string of protests over a wide range of demands, from wider regional autonomy to the creation of more local jobs.
