McDermott International, Inc. (NYSE:MDR) announced today
that The Babcock & Wilcox Company ("B&W") has received a contract
valued at more than $50 million from Kansas City Power & Light
("KCP&L"), a subsidiary of Great Plains Energy Incorporated, to supply
a selective catalytic reduction ("SCR") system for the LaCygne
Generating Station in Linn County, Kansas. The plant is jointly owned
by KCP&L and Westar, and operated by KCP&L.
Work will be completed on LaCygne Unit 1, an 825-megawatt unit
which B&W originally supplied in 1973. B&W will provide the
engineering, procurement and construction of the SCR system,
foundations, structural steel, flues, ammonia storage system, process
piping and electrical. Materials for the project will be sublet.
Babcock & Wilcox Construction Co., Inc. will begin preliminary tie-in
work at the site in April 2006, with start-up scheduled for May 2007.
The addition of the SCR will reduce nitrogen oxides emissions at the
plant, thus improving air quality in the Kansas City area.
