International stocks trading in New York closed mostly lower on Tuesday.

The BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts fell 0.36% to 139.56. The European index decreased 0.34% to 141.11, the Asian index dropped 0.55% to 143.69, the Latin American index rose 0.49% to 180.68 and the emerging markets index declined 0.45% to 227.93.

Harmony Gold Mining Co. (HMY, HAR.JO) was among the companies with ADRs that traded actively.

Harmony Gold reported a wider loss for its fiscal year ended June 30, as the South African miner restructured its operations amid low gold prices and higher operating costs. ADRs fell 5.7% to $1.

OAO Mobile TeleSystems (MBT, MTSS.MZ) said its second-quarter profit dropped nearly 22%, hit by lower operating income and foreign-exchange losses. Russia's biggest telecom company warned Tuesday that unstable macroeconomic factors in its chief operating countries, such as Russia and Ukraine, may further impact the company's financial and operational performance. ADRs edged up by a penny to $7.86.

Trina Solar Ltd. (TSL, K3KD.SG) said its profit more than quadrupled in its latest quarter, as the China-based solar-panel maker benefited from stronger global solar demand. Results easily topped analysts' expectations. Chief Executive Jifan Gao said demand in the global solar markets continues to trend upwards, led by China, the U.S. and India. ADRs rose 1.5% to $10.33.

The U.K. government said Tuesday that it was offering new onshore blocks to explore for shale gas to a range of companies that include oil giant Total SA (TOT, FP.FR) and utility GDF Suez SA as Britain steps up efforts to kick-start a shale industry and unlock potential reserves. Total's ADRs fell 1.9% to $48.02.
