Home Depot Inc. is replacing the head of its U.S. stores, Marc Powers, with another longtime company veteran, the latest major retailer to change brass in its stores operation.

Ann-Marie Campbell, one of Mr. Power's deputies, will take over his position. Mr. Powers, 54, will leave the company effective Feb. 1, according to a Home Depot spokesman, who said the decision was mutual.

Home Depot is the third large U.S. retailer to make a change at the top of stores operations this month, as retailers grapple with what role their physical stores should play at a time when more shopping is being done online.

Target Corp. early in January abruptly fired Tina Tyler, its chief stores officer, replacing her with another Target veteran, Janna Potts. J.C. Penney Co. on Monday also plucked a Home Depot executive, Joe McFarland, as its new head of stores. Mr. McFarland was president of Home Depot's northern and western divisions.

At Home Depot, Ms. Campbell, 50, is following a similar path as her predecessor. She has been with the home-improvement retailer for more than 30 years, starting as a cashier in South Florida before rising through the store ranks, most recently serving as president of its southern division.

Mr. Powers took over the U.S. store division in 2014 after Marvin Ellison left Home Depot to become chief executive of J.C. Penney. A Home Depot spokesman said Mr. Powers wasn't available to comment.
