GTECH to Provide 7,000 Additional Handheld Lottery Terminals to
Organizacion Nacional De Ciegos Espanoles (ONCE) in Spain
Visually Impaired Retailers Benefit From Handheld Lottery Terminal Ease Of Use
WEST GREENWICH, R.I., June 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- GTECH Holdings
Corporation (NYSE:GTK) today announced that Organizacion Nacional de Ciegos
Espanoles (ONCE) has exercised an option in its existing agreement with GTECH
for the provision of an additional 7,000 handheld lottery terminals. ONCE,
also known as the Spanish National Organization for the Blind, is authorized by
the Spanish government to administer lottery and wagering games in Spain.
"Last year, GTECH collaborated with ONCE to bring their existing lottery
activities online, and introduced a new handheld lottery terminal to the
thousands of visually impaired retailers who sell lottery tickets," said GTECH
President and CEO W. Bruce Turner. "We appreciate ONCE's continued confidence
in GTECH's products and services. With this new order, ONCE's handheld terminal
count is expected to rise to approximately 14,000 by the end of this year."
ONCE, which provides employment to over 60,000 disabled people, many of whom
are visually impaired, was the first GTECH customer to be connected to an
online lottery system through the new, highly secure handheld lottery
terminals.
In 2002, GTECH teamed with Ingenico, the world leader in secure transaction
payment and transaction systems, to deliver an innovative, secure handheld
lottery terminal for the thousands of visually-impaired retailers in Spain.
The Ingenico i8500 terminal integrates highly secure online transaction
capabilities, with state-of-the-art GSM/GPRS wireless communications. The
terminal also offers array imaging technology which allows retailers to scan
previously-issued tickets, smart card and magnetic card readers, a receipt
printer, and Text-to-Speech technology, combined in a compact, ergonomic, and
durable package optimized to aid the visually-impaired ONCE lottery retailers.
The Text-to-Speech technology reads and translates incoming messages into
Spanish for the retailer, while the GSM/GPRS wireless communication permits the
retailer to roam.
With respect to this terminal sale with ONCE, GTECH expects to generate
approximately $11 million in revenue.
