The Detroit car companies have agreed to temporarily shut down their U.S. factories to protect workers against the rapidly spreading coronavirus, according to people familiar with the matter, a massive work stoppage that will affect roughly 150,000 factory employees.
Executives from General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co. and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV reached the decision Wednesday following discussions with union leaders, the people said.
The United Auto Workers had been pressing the car companies for a two-week shutdown of their U.S. plants as concerns about the virus spreading among workers has grown on factory floors. It couldn't immediately be learned how long the car companies have determined to suspend work.
Spokespeople for Ford, GM and Fiat Chrysler didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.
