ComEd to be honored with prestigious award for innovative, one-of-a-kind STEM education program

Demonstrating a strong commitment to the community and education, ComEd has received the gold award in Chartwell’s 12th Annual Best Practices Awards in the Communication category for its unique “Icebox Derby” STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education program. The gold award is the highest honor a company can receive in the award program.

Chartwell awards recognize excellence among electric and gas utilities with respect to projects, programs and service initiatives. The categories include Billing and Payment Programs, Communications, Customer Service, Outage Communications and Program Marketing. ComEd’s Icebox Derby, which was recognized in the communications category, is an educational program bringing 30 teen girls together from across Chicagoland for a hands-on STEM experience by turning recycled refrigerators into electric race cars.

“ComEd is honored to be recognized by Chartwell as an industry leader for our Icebox Derby program, which focuses on exciting young women about the prospects of a career in STEM, while also building ComEd’s future workforce from our own towns and neighborhoods,” said Anne Pramaggiore, President and CEO of ComEd. “Now in its third year, Icebox Derby continues to offer a state-of-the-art learning experience to the young women involved. This year, we added solar panels as a way to teach girls about renewable energy, and we’re already looking at ways to expand the program for next year.”

ComEd will receive the Gold Award during EMACS – The Customer Experience Conference, Oct. 3-6 in Orlando. All Best Practice Award winners and finalists will be recognized during an awards luncheon on Oct. 5. The conference features more than 30 sessions focused on customer experience-related issues facing the utility industry, including billing and payment, customer care, marketing, energy programs, and outage communications.

In addition to winning an award the Icebox Derby program has received national recognition through recent reports in the Wall Street Journal as well as other local and industry news outlets. For more information, visit www.theiceboxderby.com.
