COMED SENDS MORE THAN 200 CREWS TO HELP UTILITIES AS EAST COAST BRACES FOR WINTER STORM JONAS
More than 700 highly trained utility personnel prepare for multi-day restoration effort
As the East Coast prepares for potentially historic and damaging Winter Storm Jonas, ComEd is sending more than 200 ComEd and contractor crews to provide restoration assistance to electric utilities PECO in Philadelphia and BGE in Baltimore. The storm system could produce two feet of snow and 60 mile-per-hour winds.
Contractors departed on Thursday and are expected to arrive on Friday. ComEd crews left on Friday and will arrive on Saturday.
The crew numbers include:
“We are very fortunate to have experienced and dedicated employees who, day in and day out, manage the complex electrical grid that powers our customers’ lives,” said Terence R. Donnelly, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “Our crews are eager to use that experience to help their fellow electric workers and the communities of Philadelphia and Baltimore.”
In addition to crews, ComEd sent its newest mobile command unit vehicle – a vehicle that can be taken to the hardest hit areas and provides command capabilities to direct restoration efforts.
Responding crews are prepared for below freezing temperatures, deep snow and slippery conditions. Expected damage includes downed power lines and broken poles. Upon arrival, crews will receive a safety briefing before beginning any work.
“With millions of people facing power outages on the East Coast, we think it’s important to work with our sister utilities to get customers whose power service is impacted by this storm restored as quickly and safely as possible,” said Donnelly. “This is one of the strengths of the Exelon group of utilities. We have similar processes that make it more efficient to provide assistance to each other during significant storm events such as Winter Storm Jonas.”
