Wireless Phone Drive and Holiday Gift Collection Support Massachusetts Domestic
Violence Victims and Children Living in Shelters
WOBURN, Mass., Nov. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- During the upcoming season of giving,
the 45,000+ daily visitors to New England's busiest train hub, Boston's South
Station, will be able to donate a variety of items that will benefit those
affected by domestic violence. Equity Office, manager of South Station, will
hold a phone collection drive through Monday, November 29th followed by a gift
collection drive through mid-December.
A Phone Recycling Drive
South Station is holding a wireless phone recycling drive in support of Verizon
Wireless' HopeLine(SM) program. HopeLine is a multi-faceted program that
provides wireless phones, voice mail, and cash donations to domestic violence
organizations across the country.
At the center of HopeLine is a phone-recycling program, and phones collected
through HopeLine are refurbished for donation to victims, recycled or sold.
The funds raised from the sale of refurbished phones are used to purchase
wireless phones, combined with donated airtime, for use by victims of domestic
violence. Verizon Wireless accepts any no-longer-used wireless phone,
regardless of model or carrier. An added benefit is that no-longer-used phones
and batteries are recycled in an environmentally-friendly manner.
As a result of HopeLine and related phone recycling programs, Verizon Wireless
has donated more than 24,000 phones to shelters and $7.9 million in monetary
and in-kind donations in the last three years to prevention programs and
advocacy groups across the country.
A Holiday Gift Drive For New, Unwrapped Toys, Games and Books
From November 30th through December 17th South Station will collect toys, games
and books for children ranging in age from infants to teens. All items
collected will be donated directly to domestic violence shelters in New England
through the Verizon Wireless Kids In Need Holiday Drive.
Now in its fourth year, the Verizon Wireless Kids In Need Holiday Drive is run
through the company's 56 New England-based stores. Each store 'adopts' an area
domestic violence shelter and collects items, to help make the holidays
brighter for children living in domestic violence shelters.
"Unfortunately, many children living in shelters with their mothers have fled
their homes due to domestic abuse, with little more than the clothes on their
back, they often leave a favorite toy, game or book behind," said Bob Stott,
president of the New England region for Verizon Wireless. "As a company we have
a long-standing commitment of helping victims of domestic violence, and the
Kids In Need Holiday Drive allows us to further this commitment to the most
innocent victims ... the children."
