On May 14th at midday, Endesa (NYSE:ELE)
Chairman, Manuel Pizarro, and the mayors of Gibellina, Santa Ninfa and
Salaparuta (all in the province of Trapani) inaugurated Endesa’s
second wind farm in Sicily and the company’s
sixth on Italian soil.
During the ceremony, Manuel Pizarro –accompanied
by Endesa’s CEO, Rafael Miranda, members of
the Board of Directors, the Chairman and General Manager of Endesa
Italia, Jesús Olmos and Joaquín
Galindo, thanked the three local councils for their contribution to the
wind farm’s installation and stated that
cooperation in the countries where Endesa is present it vital to its
future development plans.
With its 38 turbines, the Gibellina, Santa Ninfa and Salaparuta wind
farm has 32 MW of installed capacity and will produce nearly 75 GW/h a
year, equivalent to the average consumption of approximately 18,000
families. This output will also mean saving the equivalent of 7,800
tonnes of oil a year and the subsequent saving of some 50,000 tonnes of
C02 emissions.
During the inaugural act, Endesa Italia’s
General Manager underlined the importance of the investments the company
has made on Italian soil since 2001 when Endesa first entered the
Italian market. Since then Endesa has invested over Euro 3.4 billion
added to which are the Euro 1.5 billion earmarked for 2007-2011.
He also stressed Endesa’s efforts concerning
the environment (all the Company’s
installations in Italy are EMAS certified) and in particular the
development of renewable energy sources including hydro, biomass and
wind power. In 2008 Endesa will have close to 350 MW of installed wind
capacity in Italy.
